SDCC 2016: An Interview With NCIS: LA’s Daniela Ruah

NCIS: LA fans, brace yourselves, we caught up with your very own Daniela Ruah (Kensi Blye) at San Diego Comic-Con and we chatted with her about all things NCIS: LA, her upcoming pregnancy and that big Densi story-line coming up.

Our interview began with the obvious elephant, well bump, in the room. How has it been filming season eight while pregnant?

“When we started the show this season most of the crew didn’t know that I was pregnant. (And now). Our production team and crew is a lot more cautious with me than I am,” she said, while laughing. It seems Daniela has a bit more Kensi Blye in her than meets the eye. As for stunts, “I don’t need a stunt double to kick in a door. I can do that. I can kick.” Ruah answered.

We agree. She’s on tough cookie. She always has been. Or was that her character? Well, meeting her makes it obvious that Daniela and Kensi are not two completely separate individuals. There’s a lot of the actress that plays her in our favorite NCIS agent.

And we couldn’t be happier!

So, how does the pregnancy affect her job, if it does? “I think my emotions come to me more readily. There’s definitely a more ‘on the surface of your skin’ emotional side. There’s a more nurturing side to myself that is just… there.” Ruah answered.

We don’t want to jump ahead, but considering all the emotions Kensi is due for next season, that’s probably a good thing.

Pregnancy aside, the conversation turned to her toughest moment filming so far – not just from this season, but in general. With her particular candor, she shared that she was so new to the business when she began NCIS: LA that everything was new to her! “I was so green and new when we started the show, that everything that I’ve done is new and different for me. Doing comedy was different for me. Every step of the way has kinda seen challenges.”

Finally, we had to ask if there was anything she would love to do on the show? “We’ve kinda done almost everything. I would like to play someone who is very different than who I am,” Ruah finally sentenced, after a lot of thought.

As for the next season, and the Densi of it all, Ruah seemed thrilled with what’s coming for us, even if the pregnancy will mean some missing time for her character and some challenges ahead for our favorite couple. Despite that, she confirmed Kensi and Deeks would be taking that final step (marriage, not kids! Not yet, at least) , and teased: “I’m excited for them to see the sequence of events. I’m excited for people to see the proposal and what stems from that.” Ruah teased.

We’re excited too. In fact, we’re a little more excited now.
