After a tumultuous summer of bad news and then eventually good news, production has finally begun on the series finale of the cult Netflix hit, Sense8.
The cast has been posting across social media since production began last week in Berlin. Many of the posts have generally been spoiler free, but Miguel Ángel Silvestre, who plays Lito, did share this little tidbit.
Chances are no one remembers all the filming locations from the first two seasons of Sense8 – it’s 16, but don’t ask for the all the city names. Only one of the cities highlighted on Silvestre’s script was featured in the past. Berlin, Wolfgang’s (Max Riemelt) home base, has been a staple since the beginning of the series. What’s interesting, though, is Paris. The City of Light was only mentioned during the second season when Kala (Tina Desai) and Wolfgang planned their romantic rendezvous. Their trip never came to fruition because the ever present and evil entity BPO had other plans. The other cities, Brussels and Naples, could mean a number of things. New safe places for the sensates to escape Whispers (Terrance Mann) and BPO, the cities of other clusters, or maybe more sensate celebrations.
Brian J. Smith, who plays Will, and some of the other cast members have been posting typical behind the scenes shots. The following post from Smith’s Instagram features Toby Onwumere who plays Capheus, Eréndira Ibarra who plays Lito’s friend and housemate Daniela, and Purab Kohli who plays Kala’s husband Rajan.
Earlier this week Silvestre posted this behind the scenes video of the series finale table read posted by Silvestre on his Instagram.
What’s interesting about this is the cast and supporting cast are all there with the exception of Tuppence Middleton who plays Riley. This brings to mind one of the reasons Sense8 was deprived of a full third season. While the gigantic budget ($9 million per episode!) combined with low viewership was the ultimate undoing of this high-concept show there was also the issue of the casts’ contracts. Prior to the premiere of season 2, only half of the main cast closed deals on their contracts for a third season, according to Deadline.
During the initial shock of the cancellation co-creator J. Michael Straczynski tried to explain to fans the rumors and truths about reported contract negotiations. “The issues weren’t contractual, but that’s quite literally as far as I can go on this question out of respect for the cast,” Straczynski said via Twitter when asked directly about the actors’ contracts.
As it turns out Middleton was just working on other projects while the rest of the cast began prepping for the finale. She will be returning and so will her character’s signature blonde bob as shown in her behind the scenes picture she posted yesterday.
The Sense8 series finale is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2018. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming.
