Obviously, a summer hiatus is never something you like. You tolerate it, sure, but it’s never something that you’re content with. And depending on the show, it can either hurt excruciatingly or hurt a lot. Safe to say, Supergirl’s hiatus has been probably the most excruciating hiatus of them all.
With Supergirl set to return to Comic-Con this month, we’ve got a ton of questions following that gut-wrenching season finale that left us needing answers. And now. Whether it’s the return of Mon-El (and Karamel!) or Maggie’s answer to a very important question from Alex or to what awaits us with worldkiller Reign, there’s so much we want answered — and so much that probably won’t get answered at Comic-Con.
Here are five – of many – questions we want answered at SDCC:
1. What can we expect from Reign?
We’re not accustomed to shows revealing the upcoming season’s new big bad in advance. That’s something that’s usually saved for Comic-Con. So since we already know who our big bad is this season, we want to know a little bit more of what we can expect from this worldkiller? The only things we really know about Reign are a) the wonderful Odette Annable will be playing her, and b) we can assume that other Krypton baby in the season finale was in fact Reign. In the comics, “worldkillers” are biological weapons that are a threat to all living things. But we know how these superhero shows always like to add their own unique flair to a character. So we’ll take anything and everything we can get about Reign in this new season.
2. Can we expect a time jump?
This isn’t usually a question that I have for Supergirl because it didn’t really have a cliffhanger after its first season. But this is the first time where a time jump is something that would be significant in how it would affect our characters. Following that gut-wrenching season finale, Kara was in a very emotional place after Mon-El was forced to leave Earth because of the abundance of lead. Where do we find her? Do we find her five months later doing better but still struggling a little every day after the man she loves was sent away? And what about Alex and Maggie?! Alex asked a very important question of Maggie that we need to know the answer to. Will we have to spend most of the first act wondering? Or will we see it immediately? (More on that below!)
3. When can we expect Mon-El to return?
You’ve gotta love a good ol’ fashioned, heart-wrenching cliffhanger that needs to be addressed in the season premiere. Following the defeat of Rhea of Daxam, Mon-El was forced to leave Earth after the planet was exposed to an abundance of lead that threatened his life. It was a sacrifice that Mon-El understood, but it didn’t make his departure any less painful. The fact that Mon-El was the cliffhanger is a good indication that he’ll be present in the upcoming season. A cliffhanger needs resolution. We’re going to get that resolution this season. But the question isn’t so much if Mon-El will return but when will he return? He might return to the show but not National City (maybe a glimpse of space.) It might not be until the final seconds of the season premiere. It might not even be in the season premiere. But we’d like a little indication of when — even if we won’t get it. Plus, we need more of our sweet Karamel!
4. Did Maggie say yes to Alex’s proposal?!
It was a blink-and-you-miss-it proposal, but it was a moment that we haven’t been able to stop thinking about since it happened. Following the near-takeover of the Daxamites, Alex realized that life is all about the time that you’re given today rather than hoping for the future. So in the moment of uncertainty and wanting to live in the moment, Alex proposed to Maggie wanting to spend the rest of her firsts with Maggie. Naturally — because it’s a season finale — we didn’t get an answer. But Maggie had to say “yes,” right? But we’d be lying if we said we weren’t concerned over the news that Floriana Lima decided to step down from series regular to recurring. Hopefully that won’t affect Alex and Maggie’s relationship. But we’re still nervous until we get some answers. Any answers.
5. What can we expect from Lena’s expanded role?
Given her character’s success and how she stole our hearts last season, we’re beyond excited to get more of Lena Luthor in Supergirl’s third season. Katie McGrath was promoted to series regular after her character’s warm reception. Supergirl has been cultivating this beautiful friendship between Kara and Lena that is reminiscent of Smallville’s Clark and Lex, who started as friends and grew to become infamous enemies. And we can’t help but feel like Supergirl is creating their own version of that very successful dynamic. Obviously it’s not going to be an immediate thing. You have to let it evolve organically while throwing in obstacles that affect their relationship. While we’ve loved Lena’s desire to want to be better than her Luthor name, the show has thrown in obvious nods to Lena’s leaning toward the darkness. And we can’t wait to see what happens next for Lena.
Supergirl will appear at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday at 3:30pm in Ballroom 20. Supergirl season 3 premieres Monday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
