In Supergirl’s second season, we saw the continuation of Kara Danvers’ journey as she navigated the struggles of balancing personal life and professional life. We watched Kara also navigate the waters of romance, where she fell in love for the first time with another alien, Mon-El. And when all was said and done, we saw Kara experience her first significant heartbreak since she’s been on Earth.
We spoke with Supergirl star Melissa Benoist at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, where she teased the upcoming season – specifically how the heartbreaking events of the season 2 finale are ultimately going to affect Kara.
In two seasons, we’ve seen Kara balance being Supergirl and being Kara Danvers, which hasn’t always been easy, but she’s managed to do it. In season 3, we’re going to find Kara throwing herself into work after she lost Mon-El – her first love and her first, real heartbreak.
“When we pick up in season 3, Kara has very much dedicated herself to being Supergirl,” Benoist said. “And I don’t think she really wants to address what happened for Kara Danvers personally because that was such a massive heartbreak for her. So the balance is a little off kilter right now.”
One of the more intriguing elements for Supergirl has always been Kara Danvers, who is an alien that is so very human in her emotions and in how she lives her life. Interestingly, we’re going to get to see Kara really figure out who she is and what she wants to ultimately be.
“This season we’re really going to explore her identity,” Benoist said. “She’s really questioning whether or not she’s a human or an alien, and what she wants to be.”
