In a combination we never knew we needed until now, Taylor Kitsch will be joining Dylan O’Brien in American Assassin, CBS Films and Lionsgate’s action thriller based on the bestselling book series by Vince Flynn.
O’Brien stars as hero Mitch Rapp, who joins the CIA as an assassin after his girlfriend is killed in a terrorist attack. Michael Keaton plays Stan Hurley, a Cold War veteran and Rapp’s reluctant mentor.
The two are assigned to investigate a series of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets, which puts them on a trail of a mysterious (and deadly) operative intent on starting World War III in the Middle East.
Kitsch will play that villainous operative.
We learned that O’Brien was in serious talks for the lead role in May, but it’s good to have confirmation that he has indeed locked in the lead role for American Assassin. The Teen Wolf and Maze Runner star is also reportedly in training now – great to hear after his injury on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure earlier this year.

Kitsch is best known for his roles in Friday Night Lights, John Carter, and Battleship. It will be very interesting to see someone we’re used to as a hero taking on such a dark role. One thing is sure: Kitsch and O’Brien starring opposite each other is something we definitely want to see.
Filming for American Assassin is set to start in September and will take place in London and Budapest. The script was written by Stephen Schiff, and Michael Custa will direct. The release date has yet to be announced.
