Make amends and watch all your past sins fade away. At least, that’s what the people of Sanctum believe.
This week’s episode provided more insight into the cult-like rituals that make Sanctum the refuge it seems to be. With Naming Day in full swing, our favorite space walkers – along with us – began to see the true colors of this too-good-to-be-true civilization.
Ending with a giant twist, this episode has propelled this new season into a completely new and shocking direction. We are only on the fourth episode of this season and so far it has been a wild ride.
“We look forward not back,” says Bellamy. If that is any indication of how this season is going to be played out, I am both excited and terrified.
Naming Day
The mystery of what the hell is going on in Sanctum continues.
Naming Day is a sacred ceremony which involves finding comfort in the ones you love and seeking amends for all your past wrongdoings. While it was a joyful day to the Sanctum natives, it was much more difficult for Clarke, Raven, and other former Earth citizens to find peace during this holiday.
In an effort to embrace Naming Day, Clarke goes on her own mini apology tour starting with Raven. Any time you can get these two together is a great time even though one pretty much hates the other. Raven continuing to voice her feeling about Clarke is not getting old. She’s the only one who is trying to keep Clarke in check. And if they want peace, making sure Clarke doesn’t do anything stupid is important.
I am also assuming the reason they are hyping up this level of hatred Raven has for Clarke is because she is going to become instrumental in bringing Clarke back (which I’ll get into more depth later).
Bellamy, on the other hand, forgives Clarke with a snap of a finger. While we always knew Clarke considered Bellamy to be her family, it is nice to get that affirmation after all this time.
Slay The Demon
For a split second, it looked like the old Octavia came to play in tonight’s episode and I loved it.
Octavia is a very polarizing character at the moment. You have people who despise her, people who will defend her to their last breath, and then those, like me, who are kind of in the middle. Either way, we all can agree that Octavia is in a very dark place. Almost – if not more – as dark as after Lincoln died.
It has been interesting to watch and this episode continues to show the vast layers of Octavia underneath all the bloodthirsty rage.
After being taken by The Children of Gabriel, Octavia forms a bond with a young child who has also been taken. They aren’t exactly about to become BFFs, but Octavia does try to help save this child’s life – proving that she isn’t completely lost.
Seeing Octavia do what she can to save the child’s life has sparked a glimmer of hope. Maybe the Octavia we once knew is still there.
The events also led to a new partnership between Octavia and Diyoza. Considering they are practically mortal enemies, this is going to be fun. Diyoza, a former terrorist, working with the borderline unstable Octavia, is going to be an interesting dynamic, to say the least.
Let’s Get The Party Started
They have only been in Sanctum for three days, but that doesn’t stop Raven, Jordan, and Clarke from having some fun.
Jordan is having the time of his life with his new girlfriend, Clarke is hitting up the dance floor with the town’s doctor, and Raven is building a motorcycle with her (probably) future boyfriend. It’s about time they all blew off some steam even though it doesn’t last too long.
Bellamy and Echo, however, are hitting a few bumps in the road. In case you didn’t know, Bellamy feels things and wants the world to know. Unlike Echo who doesn’t show any kind of emotion so that could only mean she doesn’t feel any pain from the loss of Monty and Harper. That’s what Bellamy thinks anyways and makes that very clear to Echo.
While I’m not the biggest Echo fan, Bellamy attacking her for the way she chooses to deal with grief is a bit uncalled for. Echo has proven herself that she is more than just a former Azgeda spy. Luckily for Bellamy, he comes to his senses and apologizes before he can dig himself in his grave any further.
Children of Gabriel
Not everyone in Sanctum believes in the “divinity of the primes” after all.
After hitting it off with the doctor on the dance floor, Clarke goes back to his room for some alone time. She soon finds out, however, that he is not the man he says he is (because how dare Clarke have any sort of happiness for more than five minutes).
He is actually a follower of Gabriel – and by a follower, I mean a diehard believer because he literally kills himself instead of being taken by the armed guard. That’s after he already drugged Clarke in an attempt to take the nightblood to the Children of Gabriel.
While his plan fails, his attack on Clarke gives Russell the opportunity he has been waiting for. In the final minutes of the show, it is revealed what exactly Naming Day is. Using what looks like a modified version of the flame, the Primes of Sanctum erase the memories of the chosen like Delilah and replace them with memories of past Primes.
Russell, in a last-ditch effort to get his daughter back, implants Clarke with this device. He erases who she once was and replaces her with the memories of Josephine. It’s brought up that this process will “kill” Clarke but I really, really hope not. Clarke is the backbone of The 100 and this show cannot possibly exist without her.
My optimistic self believes that we will see Clarke again before the season is over. Mainly because I don’t know what I’ll do if she’s dead. I’m sure we will get more answers next week in which case I’m already counting down the days until the new episode.
The 100 airs on Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
