The last episode before the season finale, “Lawrence Dane Devlin” was an action packed one, and it came with a lot of consequences. The Task Force (Aram specifically) was able to rescue Samar just in the nick of time, but not before she suffered some serious injuries. Besides being impaled through the stomach with a tire iron when her captor’s car crashed, she also ended up in a coma after nearly drowning. Things aren’t looking good as the doctors said she may never breathe on her own again.
The scene with Aram in Samar’s hospital room was absolutely heartbreaking. He finally got the chance to propose, but Samar couldn’t hear him this time. Just before the van she was trapped in went under water, she was able to tell Aram on the phone that she would have said yes if Aram had asked her to marry him. In a way, that was her accepting his proposal, but it doesn’t make the situation that she and Aram are in now any less painful. They finally got to express their feelings for each other, but now Aram may never be able to be with Samar again. Hopefully some kind of medical miracle will bring Samar back, because she and Aram deserve to be happy. They’ve both been through so much together, it would be awful to lose either one of them now.

This literally made me feel like my heart was being ripped out of my chest.
A lesser focus of “Lawrence Dane Devlin” was Red’s continuing search for the duffle bag. He now has the name of the man who’s holding it, another enemy of his named Sutton Ross, and so does Liz. Now, the season finale will be a race to the finish line for Red’s secret, a race that might leave an irreparable rift in the relationship between Red and Liz. Red clearly doesn’t want her to know his secret, and believes that it’s none of her business, while Liz will stop at nothing to find out what it is because Kaplan and Tom both wanted her to know. I’ve got to say, I’m with Red on this one. I really don’t see how his secret is any of her business, or how it was ever Tom’s for that matter. If Tom hadn’t gone looking for Red’s secret like Red warned him, he would still be alive. Every death that has happened since this suitcase of bones came to light could all have been avoided if everyone had just left well enough alone. Red has always had his secrets, but he kept them for a reason. If he tells someone that they shouldn’t dig into something because it will only lead to danger and death, they should listen, and look what happened when Tom didn’t.
Liz’s obsession with this secret really hinges on her perception that it was Tom’s dying wish for her to know what it is. I can understand why she would desperately want to discover what it is after that, but it’s gotten to a point where she’s putting everyone around her in danger in order to settle a personal issue. Not to mention that she’s basically leaving Agnes without a mom for no reason. We haven’t even seen Agnes in ages, I have no idea who’s currently taking care of her.
If Red’s secret turns out to be something vital to Liz’s life that she really does need to know, then I’ll eat my words, but I doubt that’s going to happen. If it was something she really needed to know for her safety or her family’s safety, Dembe would have found a way to tell her. He has always had sound logical and moral judgement and has gone against Red’s wishes before to tell people things that they needed to know. He hasn’t done that with this secret yet, making me feel that it isn’t something anyone needs or deserves to know.
In the promo for the season finale, we also see Red having to offer his life in return for Liz’s after she is captured and tortured by Sutton Ross. If she had just left well enough alone, she wouldn’t be in this situation needing Red to save her once again. I hope it all works out, but things are looking pretty bleak for the conclusion of this season.
