The more things change, the more they stay the same. Or so the saying goes.
In a strange sense, this is never more true than in Tom Cavanagh’s role on The Flash. Every season, a different Wells joins the team, to impart his particular scientific knowledge, Holmsian detective skills, or even romantic musings. But the shadow of the Reverse Flash hangs over them all.
“The Joker’s gotta show up for Batman, [Lex] Luthor’s gotta show up for Superman, and the Reverse Flash has to show up for Flash. And the fact that that’s always there adds something really delicious to playing the other characters. Cause you’re kinda like tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick…”
Season five of the series ended on a cliffhanger, as Nora was erased from time and the Reverse Flash escaped. The clock is ticking on when the Flash will face off against his arch nemesis once more. Could it be in a Crisis episode populated entirely with various versions of Dr. Wells?
Take it from Tom Cavanagh himself. “There’s myriad ways to get a show cancelled, and that sounds like a great one.”

The Flash season 6 premieres Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 8/7c on The CW.
