The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Shaun Murphy, a surgical resident with autism. The cast includes Antonia Thomas, Will Yun Lee and Fiona Gubelmann as his fellow residents, Richard Schiff as Shaun’s friend and mentor, Christina Chang and Nicholas Gonzalez as the surgical attendings, and Paige Spara as Shaun’s roommate/unrequited love interest. The series’ premiere in 2017 was ABC’s highest-rated Monday drama debut in 21 years.
As the parent of a young man on the autism spectrum, I love the show for its portrayals of both its lead and autistic patients that have come into its orbit. I also adore the relationships between the characters and the writing that has taken some from “people you love to hate” to people you can root for. And yes, I love the catharsis we get from these episodes.
I’m looking forward to another year of gee-whiz medical miracles, strong character growth and, of course, all the tears.
The Good Doctor returns to ABC on February 18th.
