Wynonna Earp’s “Undo It” saw Wynonna & Doc stuck in a Groundhog Day loop courtesy of Ballshar and his magic dust. We also were gifted with the startling revelation that Bulshar’s ring wasn’t his after all. It was Waverly’s pops and now that it’s on her finger she’s starting to do some magical things.
“Undo It” tops it all off with a serving of realizing that Wynonna isn’t perfect and she will mess up on occasion. I know plenty of people knew that from day one and have remembered that into season three. But maybe I needed a little refresher course on the hot, yet realistic, mess that is Wynonna Earp. After all, aren’t we all a little bit of a hot mess?
Let’s talk the good, the bad, and the ugly of Wynonna Earp’s “Undo It”!
The Good – Wynonna & Doc’s Capture
I know what you’re thinking. There’s no way that what happened to Wynonna & Doc is a good thing and that I’m absolutely mad for thinking that. But give me a moment to explain.
The capture of Wynonna & Doc was the best thing to happen to this episode, also a sign of the excellent writing of this show, because it reinvented the Groundhog Day effect. There have been PLENTY of shows that have taken this route when it comes to storytelling. It’s a way to test their characters and keep the storyline simple, yet engaging. And at this point, it’s a classic.
Wynonna Earp ramped things up and changed the game by not spending every single second focusing on the different ways that Wynonna was failing at figuring a way out of there. It wasn’t one creative death after another. Sure, we heard about them but we spent more time seeing Wynonna’s frustration and how her companion Doc was inaccessible but nearby.
We had a Wynonna that was slowly broken down, who was aware of what was happening, and who understood the stakes. She kept fighting at every turn, like everyone does in these Groundhog-esque storylines, but it wasn’t “just” funny. It was heartbreaking, full of regret, and so much love for Doc, Waverly, and the rest of the gang.
Peacemaker being given up for their freedom is something you don’t see often either. The good guys always win, the day is saved, and this is just brushed off as a funny filler episode. This is no filler episode and the stakes have just been blown out the window. And right now, I have no idea what’s coming and that’s a great thing.
The Bad – Waverly and Her New Jewelry Aren’t Going Anywhere
Bulshar’s ring turning out to be Waverly’s, BLEW MY MIND! I shouldn’t be surprised by this show’s capability to keep me on my toes, yet here we are. The entire time we’ve seen this big & bad ring, it’s been a thing of evil, destruction, and pain. But maybe it was the hand that it was on that unlocked it’s true capabilities.
On Bulshar’s hand the ring was a thing of evil and corruption. On Doc’s the ring was a thing of punishment and pain. On Waverly’s hand the ring is a thing of unlimited power that is helping her protect her family at every turn. And as much as I love our pint sized half-angel and her sudden boost of power, it always come with a price.
Things aren’t free on this show and everything carries a burden. Even Peacemaker, the destroyer of demons in the hand of the Earp Heir, has a heavy weight to it. So this magical ring, that used to belong to Waverly’s father, will have dire consequences. And knowing Emily from her previous shows, I know that it’s going to involve a lot of pain, feels, and sacrifice on Waverly’s part.
Side Note: It can’t be a coincidence that the ring kept following Nicole and I don’t want to write it off as the ring understanding that Waverly was near. There’s a story behind that, a reason that Nicole suffered the death of her family in such a brutal way, to end up where she is now. Maybe she’s the rings protector, maybe she’s Waverly’s protector.
And maybe their meeting was more than a random chance. Maybe #Wayhaught was fate.
The Ugly – The Moment You Realize Wynonna Isn’t Perfect
Perspective is one of the most dangerous, ugly, and welcome things someone can have in their lives. This is especially true for the characters we love, connect with, and watch week after week. And right now, I can tell you that I’m getting that in troves when it comes to Wynonna Earp.
Three seasons in and she still has issues that would leave an outsider thinking that she’s a hot damn mess. But aren’t we all a little bit of a hot mess sometimes? And like Wynonna, don’t we just keep going, stand up, and brave the day? Yes, we do. So looking at Wynonna, understanding that there are moments we’ll love her and moments we’ll go ughhhhh at her ineptitude, is a good thing.
Wynonna Earp is real. And maybe….no, wait. Not maybe. I would LOVE to see more characters like her on TV. I would like to go, “Damn it, why did you do that? I understand and give you props for trying to be a realistic woman, but damn it!” more often, than not. And I would love to see more women falling, building themselves up back up, and flipping the world the bird before stumbling, crawling, or running towards whatever comes next or is in their way.
That’s what we do every single day and it’s about time we see more of it on TV.
Favorite Moment from Wynonna Earp’s “Undo It”:
Don’t think I didn’t know what you did Emily Andras! Teasing us with all that panting! T-E-A-S-E! A+ acting by Dominique and Kat. They also knew what they were doing. ;D
