Happy New Year, Gladers! What better way to kick off 2015 than by catching up on The Maze Runner news?
Maze Runners Among 2014’s Hottest On-Screen YA Stars
Dylan O’Brien and Ki Hong Lee are representing The Maze Runner on MoviePilot’s list of 2014’s Hottest On-Screen YA Stars (Guy Edition)! We loved seeing our favorite Runners on this list. There’s a poll at the bottom, too, so make sure to vote for Dylan and Ki Hong as your favorites!
Our Spidey Senses are Tingling
With all the rumors that Marvel may be rebooting Spider-Man sans Andrew Garfield, the internet is working overtime to determine who would make the perfect Spidey. One of the top contenders? The Maze Runner‘s own Dylan O’Brien. As much as we adore Andrew Garfield’s incarnation of the web-slinging superhero, this is one movie we’d do anything to see.
Here’s what Fashion & Style had to say about why Dylan would be the perfect Peter Parker:
When it comes to the perfect combo of cute, snarky, and dorky, we can think of few actors who better fit the bill. Plus, after starring in ‘The Maze Runner’, he’s proved he can carry a big blockbuster franchise.
We couldn’t agree more.
Dylan O’Brien has previously named Spider-Man as one of his favorite superheroes (and a role he’d be very interested in taking on): “…Kinda nerdy dude in high school, then he gets to be a superhero running around New York City, doing spider webs and stuff… That’s basically my entire dream as a human being.. I like wanna be Peter Parker.”

Kaya Scodelario Engaged?
It looks as though congratulations may be in order for Kaya Scodelario. The actress shared the above photo on Instagram this week, thanking her boyfriend, Benjamin Walker, for making her “the happiest woman in the world.” Along with this picture of the pair and Kaya’s mom, it seems as though Kaya and Ben may indeed be engaged.

If so, congratulations to Kaya and Ben! According to Sugarscape, “22-year-old Kaya has been dating 32-year-old Ben since last year and recently moved to New York to be closer to him.”
Wes Ball Talks to Crave Online
Wes Ball talked casting, book to movie changes, and more in an exclusive interview with Crave Online. Here’s an excerpt of Wes discussing the lack of sexual tension between Kaya and Thomas (and the other Gladers):
Yeah! That’s something that actually attracted me to it, because it isn’t in the book either. I wasn’t really interested in doing the typical love triangle thing. I will say that there is technically a connection. There’s definitely a past and a history that we get to expand on in the future movies. But there was never really a love thing, it was always a little more innocent. And it focused more on just the kind of the brotherhood and survival aspect of this movie and the circumstances that they found themselves in. It’s just a boyish adventure, and I felt like that was going to be something different to bring to the YA genre. I guess you could call it that. That kind of excited me that we didn’t have that old flavor.
It’s a great interview that offers insight into the casting process, how the movie may have hopefully launched some film careers, and so much more! Check out the full piece here.
‘The Scorch Trials’ Shooting in Less Than Scorching Temperatures
The Albuquerque Journal wrote a feature on The Scorch Trials (which is currently filming in town). Wes Ball talks about how they’ve had some unexpectedly cold nights shooting in the desert and shares that they will be done shooting at the end of January before heading off to edit. He also shared why they chose New Mexico for the shoot:
“When we were scouting we realized that New Mexico has everything we needed,” he says. “Awesome locations, great people and the crew base is so talented, it makes it an easy job to film.”

James Dashner Talks Movie Involvement
In celebration of the recent DVD release of The Maze Runner, James Dashner did an interview with HamptonRoads.com. He discussed his involvement in the movie process, some of his inspirations for the story (The Shining, anyone?), and more. Here’s an excerpt in which Dashner weighs in on the appeal of the fantasy genre:
Fantasy is so big, with Harry Potter and all that. ‘The Maze Runner’ is another version of that other-worldly excitement. It makes people think. Teenagers, especially as they contemplate their future,… think about what kind of world they’d like to live in…. But, honestly, my No. 1 goal is that I like to write and create stories that are fun to read.
