Excuse me because I’m currently flailing and gasping and crying over this new The Darkest Minds trailer, which features my OTP: Ruby & Liam.
The trailer features a scene familiar with fans of the book of the same name by Alexandra Bracken, where Liam is telling Ruby a story about how they would’ve met had things not gone completely wrong in society. Fused together with scenes from their actual grim reality, we hear Lee tell Ruby how their meeting and “them” would be “inevitable.”
For those fans that have read the book, you know exactly what scene this is in the book. It’s actually nearly word for word from Bracken’s book, another positive indication that this film adaptation will stay true to the book, including infusing scenes and dialogue from the book. That’s something that most productions, unfortunately, don’t get right.
“What happens next?”
Well, you’re going to have to go see (and/or read — yes, definitely and read) to find out.
If you think these two have you emotional already, just you wait. In the meantime, I’m going to go rewatch it again and again until I can somehow manage to get ahold of myself because my heart is breaking for my beautiful babies.
When teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby, one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.
The film stars Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson, Miya Cech, Skylan Brooks, Mandy Moore, and Gwendoline Christie.
The Darkest Minds hits theaters Aug. 3.
