This week’s episode of This Is Us, Jack Pearson’s Son, set all of lot plot lines in motion. In this episode, we learned about Randall’s mental illness and Jack and Rebecca’s marriage issues. Also, we saw Kate’s problems with talking about Jack’s death. I am really interested in seeing all of these plots developed in the rest of this season.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
It’s Valentine’s Day for Jack and Rebecca, it seems like they are working well through her bombshell at the end of last week’s super romantic scene that she wanted to go on tour.
Jack venting to Miguel about Rebecca going on tour is just making me uncomfortable. Miguel wants a ring man and Jack invites him their Valentine’s dinner like ugh.
Rebecca never told Jack that she had a relationship with Ben from the band. She is going on tour with the guy. That is not cool. Yeah, it is ancient history but he is your partner and deserves to know. Jack tells her that he doesn’t want her to go on tour because of this. Rebecca wanted something for herself that “Jack wouldn’t be in the way of.” My feelings toward Rebecca have become so mixed. I love that seeing these characters over such a long period we see them progress. We see the worse sides of them and the best.
Jack goes to the Valentine’s Day dinner by himself and has a drink. We already know that he has a past of alcohol abuse. It is really upsetting to see relapse.
I Ship Toby/Kate So Much!
I loved seeing Kate stand up to Duke and standing up for herself. It was great to see the writers steering her away from a self destructive moment. The idea of a love triangle being forced into her story irked me so this revelation made me so happy. It felt so unnecessary to her character development. But hearing Duke say he gets away with putting women down and being a jackass because he parents own the camp completely sucked. This storyline has been so great for Kate’s self esteem and I would hate to see her regress.
Toby and Kate’s reunion is hysterical. The line about Duke being the Jared Leto bad boy of camp made me die. I like seeing that Toby realizes how fast their relationship has progressed. I feel like the way the show is broken up by the past it is easy to forget how the timeline of the present hasn’t been that long at all. The shopping scene has some of the best dialogue when they were learning more things about each other. It was funny but then it reached a darker edge when Kate asked about Toby’s depression after his wife left him. Toby asks Kate to tell him about her dad’s death, she still can’t talk about how Jack died. I’m really glad that they chose not to reveal his death yet. I need to know what happens to him.
Toby wants to have a long engagement to get to know each other. Kate needs to be comfortable enough to tell him about Jack’s death.
Kevin’s Katie Couric dream interview was hysterical. “Self produce” was one of the best parts. I keep forgetting about the play. Mainly from the Sophie curveball they threw at us. I never thought about how Kevin slept his way to the top since I’ve started to have a soft spot for him I’ve forgotten what an ass he is. I love that Katie Couric has been a recurring nightmare for him. It was so funny. Katie Couric strikes fear into his heart. Sophie knowing him so well is beautiful.
Okay, it is obvious that I am not a huge fan of Miguel. The scene in which Miguel gives Kevin a pep talk by telling him he is like his father warmed my heart. Miguel tells him that Jack was his best friend and he knows Kevin doesn’t like him made me hate him a bit less. Kevin is Jack Pearson’s Son and that makes him great.
Randall’s Mental Illness
Randall has gone from being on this pedestal of perfection to being completing overwhelmed as life crashes around him. Randall is trying to process his job issues, William’s health, and Beth’s mom being hurt, while dealing with adult issues. I think it is an interesting juxtaposition. Kevin and Kate are always the ones with issues and Randall seems to always be on the right track.
Randall not going to Kevin’s show really upset me. Kevin has been trying so hard to fix their relationship as a result this is going to be a set back. But seeing Kevin leave the play and go to Randall when he needed him the most really brought on the waterworks for me. Randall’s mental health is definitely going to be a plot line the show will be delving into.
Next week’s episode, puts Randall and William at the forefront. Randall had been boring me for the past few episodes and Jack Pearson’s Son reminded me why I love his character.
This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
