Valentine’s Day is almost here, and the pressure to choose the perfect movie is on. Whether you’re in a relationship, keeping it casual, or flying solo, choosing your Valentine’s Day movie is no simple task. Do you go for an all-out romance and risk unrealistic expectations (not to mention tears – *cough* The Notebook *cough*)? Do you avoid the subject altogether for an action movie or drama?
The choices are infinite, so we’re making it easy: add Two Lovers and a Bear to your watch list. Read on for why we’re recommending this movie, plus an amazing giveaway you won’t want to miss.
So, Two Lovers and a Bear. Set in a tiny town near the North Pole, this Canadian indie drama follows Roman (Dane DeHaan) and Lucy (Tatiana Maslany), “two burning souls who come together to make a leap for life and inner peace.” It’s a unique film that combines elements of romance, wanderlust, and high-stakes situations that will give you all the feels. Here are five reasons to watch…
1. This Girl
As Clone Club members have known for years, Tatiana Maslany is pretty amazing. The Orphan Black actress is super talented (not to mention badass), and she brings both humor and heart to the role of Lucy.
2. This Guy
Then there’s Dane DeHaan, whom you may recognize from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or the upcoming A Cure for Wellness. Not only do Dane and Tatiana have great chemistry, but his eyes stare straight into your soul and do a serious number on your emotions. A++.
3. The Talking Polar Bear
Yep, you read that right. The polar bear plays a significant role in this movie, but not in a way that I would have ever expected. Voiced by Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent, the bear is a cool character (no pun intended) with a soothing, slightly sassy presence. He adds a layer of magical realism to the film that sets it apart.
4. The Ambience
Between the gorgeous shots of the scenic – yet unforgiving – Arctic landscape to the captivating soundtrack, Two Lovers and a Bear definitely isn’t short on ambience… which is something you definitely need in a Valentine’s Day movie. And as great as the majesty of nature is, this movie really has it all: there’s a fantastic scene involving “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes that may just be our favorite from the whole film.
5. The Unconventional Story
If the talking polar bear doesn’t get you on-board, Roman and Lucy’s story should do the trick. The two seem to have it all figured out, with straightforward lives watching snowmobile races, ice fishing, and drinking with friends for fun. But when the prospect of Lucy moving to finish her degree shakes things up, she and Roman ultimately decide to head out into the wilderness to see how they are together with no distractions.
The highs and lows of this journey and the unexpected turns it takes make for a captivating ride. The story is beautiful and never predictable, ending with a breathtaking scene that will leave you thinking.
