Review & Giveaway: ‘Vengeful’ by V.E. Schwab

Power. Revenge. Women who are underestimated. Men who are brought to justice. These are just a few of the topics that are dominating the headlines these days (though that last one seems to be more wishful thinking) – and the themes that are central to Vengeful. The sequel to V.E. Schwab’s 2013 bestseller Vicious is a masterpiece – a dark and riveting tale that reminds you how good writing can be and puts powerful women at the forefront.

Tor Books is partnering with us for a giveaway of both books, as well as a Villains Series prize pack. Read on for your chance to enter!

Vicious is one of the books that I recommend most often, and I am among the many fans who have been waiting years for Schwab to continue the series. Vengeful did not disappoint. (Mild spoilers for both books to follow. And pro tip: If you’re too eager to dive in to wait for a proper re-read of the first book, Tor has an excellent recap here.)

Victor Vale is back from the dead, but he’s experiencing… complications. As the pressure mounts to undo the damage death has done to him, Victor struggles to keep his makeshift family safe and under the radar. Eli Ever is in custody, but still up to his old tricks and determined to eliminate all EOs. Meanwhile, a dangerous new EO is rising back in the town of Merit. Fresh from her brush with death, Marcella Riggins has gained the control she always sought – and will use it to seize all the power she can get. She’ll do whatever it takes, collecting her own sidekicks, and leveraging Victor and Eli against each other once more. With Marcella’s rise, new enmities create opportunity – and the stage of Merit City will once again be set for a final, terrible reckoning.

While Victor and Eli’s stories and star-crossed enmity remain as compelling as ever, they are largely in the background even as their presences loom large. Instead, women take the center stage: Marcella; Sydney Clarke, who can raise the dead and continues to travel with Victor and Co.; and June, a newly introduced EO who can take on anyone else’s appearance but has essentially given up her own identity by gaining her powers. Especially given the present political climate, it is beyond satisfying to see these women defy expectations, take down bad men, and generally give a new definition to the word badass. Each of them represents different ways to be powerful, and all are so needed.

The story itself is riveting, with different perspectives and timelines careening towards an inevitable epic clash. You don’t know what will go down until it’s happening – just that it’s going to have major consequences for the characters we love and love to hate. Schwab’s writing is gorgeous and elegant throughout it all, elevating the reading experience and making Vengeful a joy to read. (I mean, a heart-wrenching and sometimes painful experience to read, but a joy in that it’s so damn good.)

Bottom line: you need to read this series. We’ll leave it at that.
