Wattpad Block Party SEII Author Interview @MikaelaBender

We are officially a month away from the start of the Wattpad Block Party SEII, which begins August 2016…and we still have plenty of exclusive author interviews to feed your Wattpad cravings all the way to the deadline!

Meet @MikaelaBender

What is it about Wattpad that makes it such a wonderful forum for writers?…

Oh there are so many things. One of the most helpful is that it helps you create a following and readership that will definitely help in a query letter. I love that it gives you a chance to experience what having readers feels like. Being able to interact with them and knowing that they care about what happens in your story is enough to blow anyone away.

What is your genre? Why do you love it?

Science fiction. I love the possibilities. I love stories with aliens–I’m not sure why. Maybe because some of the boys in Expiration Date are part alien. If you haven’t met those boys yet, you should. (I’m winking at you. Okay, well maybe both eyes are shutting but in my mind I’m calling it winking.) I don’t only write alien sci-fi though. Insurrection is on the opposite side of the spectrum with more of a focus on technology and no characters possess hidden powers.

What are some of your personal accolades and milestones you have reached with your writing?

Having someone comment on Expiration Date. It may not seem like much but it took me about a month to get my first comment. I authorgirled so much from receiving it. Authorgirling is a word a came up with for authors to fangirl over their story and over their amazing readers.

Also winning the Royal Palm Literary Award in 2015. The previous year I didn’t even make it to semi-finalist. After that, I rewrote the whole story–word for word mostly. Seeing it win eight months later was an indescribable feeling, and it let me know that my writing had improved a lot. One of the judges left a really sweet comment to me that brought tears to my eyes. I want to frame it but that might be a little weird. What do you think?

I’d also have to say seeing Expiration Date hit number one in science fiction on Wattpad and it hitting a million reads were milestones.

Is this your first Wattpad Block Party? How does it feel to take part for the first time? If you’ve participated before, what has participating in past Block Parties been like?

This is my first Block Party! It feels exciting to be surrounded by all sorts of brilliant Wattpad writers (also intimidating). I’m hoping to make some WattFriends!

Who are some of your favorite Wattpad authors and why?

@AlyCat1901 for her story Betrothed to Jack Frost. The story has me swooning. I can’t believe I’m already caught up on it.

I love The Joy of Agony by @marvel-ous. It’s a Loki fanfiction and was one of the first stories I read on Wattpad. She really makes the characters her own. Loki is written fantastically.

Moon Creek by @melbastien is one of my favorite werewolf stories, and I read a lot of werewolf stories. Don’t judge.

Finally The Other Daae Girl by @the_phantom_writer is incredible. It’s a Phantom of the Opera fanfiction that is beautiful.

What writing aspirations do you still hold?

I’d love to have a novel published that I can find in Barnes and Noble. Working in a publishing house in New York City is my dream. I want to be an acquisitions editor. As far as writing aspirations on Wattpad, I’d be overjoyed if one day I was accepted into their Stars program.
