We’re excited that Halle Bailey is ready to become part of our world.
I mean, sure, she already is since we watch her every week on Grown-ish. But we’re more excited that she’s going to be Ariel in Disney’s live action adaptation of the beloved classic, The Little Mermaid.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Director Rob Marshall said in a statement.
Bailey joins Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina in the film, with Melissa McCarthy in talks to play Ursula.
While the casting has been controversial, we’re all for it. We think that Bailey is extremely talented. We’re choosing to fixate on the positive reactions.
Because that’s all there should be.

People are so bent out of shape that she is casted as Ariel. 😒 Please save me your tears, as if “white washing” doesn’t exist in Hollywood. Let Halle Bailey be great! She’s beautiful, talented and I believe she’s a perfect fit for the role! Leave her be!! #TheLittleMermaid pic.twitter.com/qvhfygYV03

Seeing a black mermaid with locks is something I never would’ve imagined seeing 10 years ago. Now many little black girls around the world will be able to look at their screens and say “That’s me! I can be a mermaid too!!” Thank you, @chloexhalle #TheLittleMermaid pic.twitter.com/oNt8EQ6bQc

Are you excited for The Little Mermaid?
What's Your Reaction?
I work a lot. Fangirlish is my baby. I work in social media professionally and I love it - which is probably why I don't keep up on my own. I don't sleep enough and I obsess too much over my favorite things. I need to work on combing my hair more. Or at elast I need to stop dying it different colors.
