Well, not that we needed confirmation of it, but Zayn Malik isnt much of a fan of fanfiction…pun intended.
In an exclusive snip it of his upcoming autobiography, coincidentally featured on popular writing forum Wattpad (which features a poop ton of fanfiction), he talks about what it is like to be the star of so many fans stories.
“Fans would write stories based on me and the other lads and publish them online. I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty unnerving reading things about yourself as a character from somebody else’s imagination.”
But on the same token, Malik can appreciate the creativity and dedication of the writers.
“But it’s cool to see that so many fans engaged with the band on their own terms like that. It’s crazy to think that we inspired so many different stories and the opportunity for so much creativity from so many people all over the world.”
Of course, fanfiction is nothing new. For example, the uber popular 50 Shades of Grey was originally a fanfiction about vampire phenomenon Twilight. And, anyone within the 1D fandom knows of Anna Todd and her New York Times bestselling After series, originally featuring Harry Styles in an alternate universe fiction.
Now, as a fanfiction writer myself, I can see both sides of this particular coin. For me, with the exception of one, all my stories have been alternate universe. Stories in which I use the lads names and characteristics, but they are not necessarily themselves. There is a freedom and a draw to write about someone you admire, creating worlds and having that sense of closeness with those characters.
But on the other side, being the subject of such creativity could definitely be ‘unnerving’. Fellow Wattpad writer Jordan Lynde has actually had fanfiction written about her, and admits it was a surprise. For people you dont know to feature you in their creative works is flattering, and something that has been a part of celebrity for as long as anyone can remember.
So, we get you Zayn. But check out some of the Wattpad fan fictions about yourself and the other lads. It may be weird, but trust me, there are some really great ones! You might find yourself tempted to write one yourself about your own celeb idols…
Of course, we would love to read it. 🙂
