‘Arrow’: Felicity Smoak Will Not Become Oracle

Following recent spoilers that revealed that Felicity Smoak’s future might be paralysis, executive producer Wendy Mericle has addressed the topic of Felicity becoming Oracle and settled that topic of conversation once and for all.

“That’s something we definitely talked about [doing] with Felicity in the beginning…. But yeah, it will not be Oracle, sadly,” Mericle told TVLine. “People have to tune in to see what happens.”

In the comics, Oracle is the codename for Barbara Gordon, who was once out in the field kicking ass as Batgirl before the Joker shot her in the spine which left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair where she accomplished a lot as the tech-savvy Oracle.

The discussion is not something fans should really be surprised about considering the show was tempted to go that route with Felicity last season when episode 5, “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak” was originally titled “Oracle,” hinting that Felicity would take a Barbara Gordon type journey. But the producers changed their minds and opted to give Felicity her own story, which she more than deserves.

After set photos leaked of Felicity in a wheelchair, as well as an Australian Arrow promo where Donna Smoak tells a distraught Oliver that Felicity’s spine is “permanently damaged” and “she’s never going to walk again,” all of the evidence pointed toward Arrow going the Oracle route with Felicity. But Mericle has put that rumor to rest saying it’s “off the table.”

If Arrow was moving forward with Felicity as Oracle, which I was never a fan of to begin with because I want Felicity’s story to be her own because a character as incredible as her surely deserves it, long term paralysis would make sense. But now with Felicity’s unique destiny coming our way we can rest easy that Felicity Smoak will rise like the glorious phoenix she is.

Arrow returns Jan. 20 with new episodes on The CW.
