Emma Watson, the UN Women Goodwill ambassador known for her involvement with HeForShe, has started up a book club! What makes it extra unique is that it’s open and accessible to ANYONE no matter where you are. To become a member all you have to do is head over to Goodreads and register for an account. After that’s done make sure to go HERE to join Our Shared Shelf.
Why a feminist book club? According to Watson she’s been getting a hold of every essay or book on equality she possibly can. Instead of just keeping it to herself (and exploding from reading overload) she’s sharing it with the world with the hope that it’ll create a space for learning and start a thought provoking discussion. So far the book club has about 80,000 members with the number growing daily!
The first book of the year is called ‘My Life on the Road’ by Gloria Steinem. It’s the tale of a writer, activist, and organizer of the feminist movement in the late 60’s and early 70’s. It focuses on her early years and the life lessons she learned along the way. We get to see how Gloria grew as a leader just as the feminist movement really gained traction.
We’ve just started reading the book and so can you! It’s never too late to explore something new and see how far we’ve come in our fight to acquire gender equality. We’ll be joining along with the discussions on Goodreads and will hold a special discussion here later on this month. Now what are you waiting for? There’s reading to do!
