‘Imagines’ Author Interview: Scarlett Drake

We’ve been talking Imagines all week and today we’re not stopping. We are talking with Scarlette Drake.

Scarlett is just one of some of our favorite things have come together in the form of a book. Wattpad and Gallery Books have teamed with International Bestselling Author Anna Todd for Imagines. Imagines is some of the greatest Fan Fic authors from Wattpad writing a unique anthology of “imagines.” Imagine your favorite day with celebrity. What you imagine isn’t half of what these authors imagine – well at least it isn’t half of what I imagined.

Read Scarlett’s interview below.

What was it about Wattpad that made you want to start writing on it?

Well, I had written my first story about two years before I published it anywhere publicly. I knew I wanted to test my writing out with an audience to see if I was any good or if I was just delusional! When I googled where to post stories, Wattpad was the first result – it’s as simple as that.

What’s the biggest lesson that you have learned from writing on Wattpad?

I guess two things. Firstly: expect the unexpected. I did not think any of my stories would generate even one hundred views, let alone hundreds of thousands of them! With that comes some amazing feedback but also the occasional negative comment. Fortunately they have been rare but when they come, they can hurt. Which brings me on to the second lesson: ignore non-constructive criticism. You need to learn when to respond to things and when it’s best to just bite your tongue.

How do you write – do you outline the book or do you just write off the cuff?

I’m definitely an off the cuff person. I don’t plan – not on paper anyway. I have lots of scenes that play themselves out in my head at the strangest times and in the strangest places and I just try writing the scene as soon as that happens, even if it might be chapters ahead. I’m always jealous of planners though – I wish I was that organized!

What published authors are your biggest influences?

My favorite writer of all time is Margaret Atwood. Her prose style leaves me breathless and in awe, the richness of her descriptions and how intricately she draws you into a scene or a feeling – I adore her. Jodie Ellen Malpas though inspired me to write my first erotic fiction story. Mainly because her characters and story just drew me in in a very simplistic way. Other writers I love are J.R. Ward, Kresley Cole (her “Immortals After Dark” series is fabulous), Gillian Flynn and the sadist that is George RR Martin.

What is the biggest misconception about authors on Wattpad? What do you want people to know?

In terms of misconceptions, firstly, that it’s all about Fan Fiction – there are lots of writers producing great original material too. Secondly, that most of us are not just writers, we’re editors, proofreaders and publishers too. We work on promoting our stories, choosing covers and making teasers and we are all just trying to hone our craft. We write because we love it and we would be nowhere without the people who read our stories!

What was it like – finding out that you were getting published?

Surreal, exciting, nerve-wracking, insane, amazing. I was so honoured to have been chosen to take part, and I was so flattered the guys at Wattpad and Simon & Schuster liked my pitch. So to have a “proper” publishing house look at my work and for them to think it was good enough to be included in this was just mind blowing really. It’s like living the dream!

Tell us about Imagines. What can we expect?

You can expect 34 fun stories written by some of Wattpad’s most popular writers (which apparently includes me!). These stories have been written with love, respect and admiration for all of the celebrities involved. Expect humorous, exciting and romantic tales involving you and some of your most beloved celebs. But remember, its just fiction!

What made you want to be part of the Imagines book?

How could I have said no? It never even crossed my mind. The chance to be published in a paper and ink anthology, the chance to be involved in such an exciting project with some amazing writers, and the chance to write about someone I myself am a huge fan of – it’s too much to take in. Wattpad have been incredible in giving some unpublished writers a taste of what it’s like to be published for the first time. I cant thank them enough for including me!

What’s the hardest thing about writing fan fiction? Do you feel a pressure to live up to the expectations of the fandom?

Well I would include myself in the fandom of the person I’m writing about so I know what it can be like in there. ☺ I also wrote some Fifty Shades fanfiction once which was a sort of alternate universe crossover – it set the cat amongst the pigeons in terms of where I went with the story, but mainly it was very well received! With this, I just want people to enjoy the story and the book as a whole, and hopefully they will see it as a little adventure into the world of the rich and famous. I hope they get what we’re trying to do and understand we’re being respectful to the people we’re writing about, even if we let our imaginations go to some strange places with them…

Tell us what you can about your story in Imagines. What is the one piece of advice that you would give your fellow Wattpad writers?

My story idea came from an interview Jamie Dornan gave the LA times about how he once “stalked” a young woman he saw on a train one day in preparation for a role. (really he followed her down one street before realizing what he was doing was a bit weird!) But it’s about imagining yourself as that young woman… It might also be worth mentioning that my story isn’t exactly what it seems either. ,)

The one piece of advice I would give a Wattpad writer today is that if you want people to read your story then you need to be prepared to promote it! Be active on Social media, make teasers, get people involved and excited and make those who aren’t reading it feel like they just might be missing out on something special! ☺ One of the things you gain by doing this is you find kind and generous and talented readers who will get excited about your story too. It connects you with other writers and talented people too. I’ve had so many readers make trailers and edits and covers for my stories and this has really helped the characters come alive. I’m so grateful for those people!

Give us one author on Wattpad that everyone should be reading.

For me it’s Lindsey Clarke (@LittleCinnamon on Wattpad) she writes sprawling, epic paranormal / Vampire fiction and has several stories to get stuck into. I’m utterly obsessed with her series The Whitechapel Chronicles. It’s honestly one of the best things I’ve ever read anywhere. I’ve cried, I’ve swooned, I’ve screamed! She’s an incredible writer and her stories insanely addictive. She’s also a lovely person too, and I adore fangirling over her!
