Without Ed Decter, Shadowhunters season two is already looking very different from season one.
Decter, who developed the adaptation of The Mortal Instruments novels for television and served as executive producer of the Freeform show in season 1 has exited the series, which has already been renewed for season 2. No replacement has yet been named.
Deadline reports that the development was sudden and unexpected, pointing out that at the end of Season 1 Decter spoke at length about his plans for season two during various interviews.
He’s reported to not have been present at today’s first table read for Shadowhunters‘ second season. The departure is said to have been due to creative differences. A new show-runners and/or show-runners are expected to be named soon, and reports indicate that they would be expected to tweak the series creative direction.
Production is expected to continue as scheduled.
Shadowhunters has brought a lot of buzz for Freeform, and good-if-not-great ratings. It recently won two Teen Choice Awards, among them, TV Breakout Show and an MTV Fandom Award for Best New Fandom of the Year.
Shadowhunters season two returns in 2017.
