MacGyver fans get ready, your favorite secret agent is about to make his way back to a TV screen near you. This fall CBS will be bringing back our favorite problem-solver. We were lucky enough to catch up with cast members Lucas Till (Macgyver) and George Eads (Jack Dalton) as well as the shows producers Peter Lenkov and James Wan at SDCC this year and we asked them about all things Macgyver.
Our interview began with the most obvious question of all, which characters will be returning to MacGyver’s world? “We are bringing back characters that were on the original show that had smaller roles and we’re making those roles a little bigger,” producer Peter Lenkov began. As for those characters, “Pete Thorton, who’s now Patricia Thorton.” will be making a return as well as “Jack Dalton, who everybody knows was one of MacGyvers closest friends, he’s going to be someone MacGyver works with at DXS and later on at the Phoenix Foundation.” Lenkov went on to explain.
MacGyver fans will be happy to hear that Jack is going to making a reappearance. We asked George Eads about his relationship with MacGyver in the new series. “Jack” Eads began “to watch my back” Till butted in jokingly. “Is a pretty good dog” Eads finished with a smile.
And what about the character names; “The characters names changed. Mac and Jack. It’s going to be easier for people to remember.” Till stated.
So what about MacGyver himself will we be seeing any changes in our favorite hero? Probably not that much, “When you look around the TV landscape there are not a lot of characters that are sort of cerebral heroes, that are thinkers before they act: that’s MacGyver.” Lenkov explained.
For those who grew up with the show, how is the 21st century going to effect MacGyvers problem-solving skills? Will having constant access to the internet take away from the heart of the show?
“We want to take that original spirit and show it to today’s audience that have easy access to the internet, youtube and social media.” Wan began “We want to go back to creative thinking solving problems without technology.” Lenkov added.
“There’s a character, Riley, she’s part of our team. That’s how we compartmentalize that. She handles all of the technology.” Till explained.
We can’t wait to meet Riley and see what she has to add to the team!
As for the show, Lenkov and Wan are hoping that it will inspire this generation to be more creative. “If you’re a young person (or really anyone) watching the show, I think you’re going to be inspired to be creative.” We here at Fangirlish hope so its about time we got a new kind of superhero.
“I think he stands for an ideal, he’s an action hero who doesn’t resort to violence until the very end.” Wan even stated. “McGyver is not the kind of guy who, when he’s in trouble, is going to use an app to fix it.”
“He’s creative and innovative” Eads explained. We couldn’t agree more.
