It was hard to walk around NYCC and not see someone with a rune on their body. While many shows are present at Comic Con, Shadowhunters definitely take over and we love it.
At the panel for the show, the trailer for the second season premiered and we’re actually excited for the shows return on January 2nd. We’ve been critical of the show – but it’s because we love these characters. It’s not a matter of hating the show – it’s a matter of knowing just how successful it can be.
We’re looking at this trailer and we’re excited. We knew that the changes in leadership and the addition of Matt Hastings would bring a change, but we didn’t know how much. And boy, were we thrilled with what we saw. We’re really excited for the possibilities. Here’s what we loved the most –
When I watch this trailer, for the first time I feel as though I am watching a TV show. I don’t feel as though I am watching a bad student film with good actors. The darker, grittier look makes me feel as though I am really watching the world that I fell for in the books. While we know that they hired new writers and a new show runner – whomever made the call on the cinematography gets a huge pat on the back.
If you have read the books, you know that the greenhouse is iconic. It is a place that I have always felt was missing from the show, as it is an important place for the evolution of Jace and Clary’s relationship. Though I do not know what is going to happen in the greenhouse this season, even having that place there feels like a step in the right direction.
“When things get crazy, don’t push me away.”
For the first time since the kiss in the first season – I actually felt some tension between the two. I wanted to root for them and tell Alec to let down his walls. I wanted to root Alec having someone that he can trust and someone that he can be vulnerable with. For the first time I didn’t remember the feeling of their relationship being rushed – I saw two men in love and I loved it.
Clary Coming Into Her Own
Can we talk about fierce Clary looks? I have been waiting for her not to whine, not to lean on someone – but to carry herself with confidence. And when she walks down the hallway in the institute – I knew that the other guy looked worse. Clary was strong and that to me was something to clap loudly for.
She doesn’t want to be protected – she wants to be out there on her own – making her way. She wants to figure things out and protect the people that have been there for her. She doesn’t want to be lied to or coddled. And that – well I am here for.
Now, I am hoping that Jace has his snarkiness of the book – but we will see. I don’t believe that when he’s holding Clary, that it’s actually Clary. If there is one thing that I learned in the first season it was that people can disguise themselves really easy in the show universe.
Jace looks conflicted and we don’t know why he makes the decisions that he does, but we know that it’s important to him. While the Institute may think that Jace has turned against them – I think that what has happened is that Jace is doing everything that he can to protect them.
Simon Embracing His Vampire Side
Simon trying to use his glamour – well, I laughed out loud. Alberto has always been Simon to me – one of the best castings on the show. We’re excited to see his character grow and him using his glamour is just a sign that he’s making the best of it. Now… we can’t wait to see him become a daywalker…
That Parabati Bond
Parabati are important and one relationship that we are all learning about that through is Jace and Alec’s. So I am excited (especially after seeing the way Matthew and Dom interact in real life) to see the way that this plays out. This looks to be part of a complex season arc for the two – finding out how to be apart. But it’s also a test of loyalty and it is admirable that Alec still remains loyal – no matter what.
We’re Finally Out of Chernobyl
Sorry – I always found Chernobyl to be a joke. A bad one. The reality is that Valentine should have been on his boat and we finally see him on it.
Izzy Is Fierce
We think that the trailer needed more of Izzy, but the little pieces that we get – she’s carrying herself with a different attitude. She is ready for what is going to happen and if the world doesn’t believe it, she’s preparing to prove it to them.
Well, we’ve been wondering where all the warriors went, but it looks as though we are getting that this season and we’re excited for it.
What were your favorite parts of the trailer?
