There is undoubtedly stress when being a part of the worlds biggest band. Travelling for months at a time, endless interviews, concerts, and appearances. Every detail of your life no longer your own, but now subject to discussion and sometimes speculation for throngs of strangers, media, and fans.
Everyone copes with such stresses differently. The usual, being drinking, drugs, and the whole rock and roll lifestyle that has been well documented within the music industry for years. But there are other means, just as self destructive, and may couple with the traditional.
So, it isn’t really that big of a surprise that Zayn Malik has revealed that he faced an eating disorder while a part of One Direction.
In his autobiography, available today, Malik reveals that he would sometimes go days without eating.
“Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder. I’d just go for days — sometimes two or three days straight — without eating anything at all. It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognize it for what it was.”
It wasn’t until November of 2014 that Malik realized his struggle. He admits that the pressures of being on the road, the scrutiny of the industry, and the strains within the band itself caused him to feel as though he had no control over his life.
“Food was something I could control, so I did,” he wrote.
We are glad Zayn has reached a place in his life where he feels he can be himself, in control of his life, and has the chance to be happy and healthy!
