‘The Originals’ Review: Stakes, Breaks, and WTF Crazy B*tch

This past Fridays episode of The Originals was a doozy. “Phantomesque,” had me thinking twice about the lengths that I would go to for love.

After the devastating events of the previous episode, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) requests that his estranged siblings Rebekah (guest star Claire Holt) and Kol (guest star Nathaniel Buzolic) return home to stand by their family against The Hollow. Meanwhile, Freya (Riley Voelkel) recruits Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) for a dangerous journey that will put both their lives at risk — but may be the sole means of saving someone they love. Elsewhere, tensions rise when Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) leads a hunt for The Hollow — putting him on a collision course with the person he was least prepared to face. Finally, as Kol continues to mourn the loss of Davina, he is forced to consider the lengths he’d go to see her again.

Elijah Mikaelson.

When I think of Elijah, there is a tingle in my body and a lust in my heart, hoping that somehow I can find a man in a tie that is just as sexy as he is. I mean is it hard to find a man in a suit, with a delightful accent, and that jaw porn? You would think that it wouldn’t be, but it totally is.

This weeks episode of The Originals left me on the edge of my seat, wishing that I didn’t find fear in one of my favorite characters on TV.

Why did you do this to me Originals writers? What did I do to you?

Lets break it down –

You all may remember that Elijah is currently in Freya’s pendant, because the Hollow is a bitter bitch and needs to have her ass put down. But that’s a different story.

So Freya is working her magic to put herself in the pendant to try and find Elijah. His mind is messed up and she needs to save her brother. Freya can’t find him though. So who seems like the obvious choice to go and get him? Well that would have been the first person that I would have sent in – Hayley.

There is no greater way to pull yourself together or fall apart than love.

Love is an insane thing. But my only issue with this was that little Hope Mikaelson had to help. That’s a lot for a child to go through. That kid has been through way too much.

I would be banking this shit for guilt when I grew up.

“Hey Uncle Elijah, remember when I got you out of that pendant?”

Just saying.

Freya couldn’t find her brother and pull him out. Hayley goes in and we relive Elijah coming back from the curse and helping Hayley (remember the first episode of the season). But, nope – he’s not in there.

He’s behind the red door.

It’s a funny thing that when he retreated he went to the worst part of himself. For Hayley to see that part of him changed everything. You could see it. You could see that she was afraid, full of fear, and didn’t know how to save him. But I think it was all over for her when he bit her.

Like it was not a kinky bite, it was effin scary.

What broke my heart was that Hayley was terrified. She’s never been terrified of Elijah and now she is. Those two were supposed be perfection, but I guess that’s the thing that we must learn – nothing is perfect. Nothing is close to being perfect.

What is reality is that relationships are difficult.

Ultimately we know that something is really wrong with Hayley and Hope freaks out. She knows that there is something wrong with her mother and she wants to fix it. So she agrees to let Freya put her in the locket and she’s to do nothing, but go in there and yell out for her Mom.

It’s her voice that is able to draw Elijah out from behind the red door.

Maybe Elijah has always been the one that does everything for family, but Hope is truly the best part of all of them.

So Rebecca and Kol return to New Orleans. The two have been off together and while at a club, everyone starts dropping dead. We all know what that means. One of The Originals is dead.

You know this family – it’s always and forever.

So the both head back and Rebecca helps Klaus retrieve the stakes that could kill an Original.

But while in the midst of retrieving stakes, she learns that Marcel has fallen in love with someone else. And I think that it has broken Rebecca a little bit, but she knows that there is only so much that she can ask for. She gives him the stake that he wants.

Because even if he is not in love with her the same way, she is in love with him. Those two are always and forever.

At least in my eyes.

But part of being in love is helping even when it means that you will be hurting.

Klaus, Klaus, Klaus…

You forgot to tell you little brother something really important. What were you thinking not telling Kol that you saw the love of his life. We all know that Kol would do anything for Davina and I have to say that I respect that.

But he runs off, because he knows that the only thing that he wants to be able to see, talk, and feel her.

But even offering to exchange dark objects for the Harvest Girls to get him a link to Davina… that doesn’t help. They squash him like a bug and take the dark objects for themselves.

But when he wakes up from the snapping his neck, what we find is The Hollow right there. She wants him to pledge his loyalty to her, but he refuses. That is until she does something that can give him what he wants – Davina back alive.

See she’s trapped by the Hollow. And the Hollow has given Kol the hardest choice of all – if he pledges his life to her, she can bring Davina back.

There’s also something that he can’t do – kill the Hollow. That bitch linked herself to Davina.

What is a man to do?

Now I am all about the Mikaelson’s always and forever mantra, but if I was Kol and I loved someone as much as he loved Davina, even I would have to rethink this one.

The Originals airs Fridays on The CW.
