What to Expect From the Return of ‘The Night Shift’

It feels like forever since The Night Shift has been on our screens, and that feeling really isn’t too far off. The season three finale “Burned” aired on August 31st, so it’s been almost a year since we last saw Drew, Jordan, TC, Topher, Paul, Shannon, Kenny, and Scott taking on all kinds of crazy situations at the hospital. Let’s go through a quick recap of where we left each character at the end of the season finale last summer. Drew and Rick had finally adopted Brianna after a bitter custody battle with her homophobic deadbeat father whom she had never met before and were looking to start their lives together as a new family.

Paul finally stood up to his father and took the side of his friends at the hospital, basically putting himself at risk to be disowned and cast out from his father’s life. After struggling with his PTSD and personal life at the hospital, TC followed Syd to Afghanistan to help injured refugees. While they were helping patients there, a bomb went off at the field hospital, leaving TC, Syd, and many others gravely injured. Back at the hospital Scott was still dealing with the aftermath of the car crashed that he caused, which injured the young man in the other car, causing his arm to have to be amputated. Scott was making payments to the family, doing everything he could to make the situation right and going to AA meetings for his alcohol addiction.

Topher was also back at the hospital dealing with insurance companies trying to buy the hospital. San Antonio Memorial had constantly been going over budget to help patients, and businessmen like Paul’s father were looking to get the hospital’s spending under control, which included firing Topher in the process. Paul’s father bought the hospital which meant the staff would get to stay together, but he was moving towards implementing policies that would not allow them to help as many people, and fired Topher, leading to Paul standing up to him.

It’s anyone’s guess what could go down in the season 4 premiere tomorrow night, but we know that Paul will be dealing with the repercussions of standing up to his father, Topher will either be looking for a new job or trying to find a way back to the hospital, Drew and Rick will be starting their new life with Brianna, Scott will still be dealing with the family of the kid he injured and his alcohol addiction, Jordan will be trying to figure out her personal life with TC gone, and TC will have to treat the man who arrested him after they got into an altercation about medicine that the refugees needed in order to save Syd’s life after the bomb blast. Whatever happens, there’s no doubt that this season will be filled with emotional stories and all of the drama anyone could ask for. Seriously, The Night Shift is one of the most dramatic shows I’ve ever seen, but it’s perfect.
