Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.
So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:
Badass Female Character of the Week
Lyra: Easter on American Gods. Ostara was poised, enthralling, and a hell of a host just waiting to free herself from the chains that the New Gods put on her. Once she remembered who she was she put on a magical display that you’d only expect to see in a Disney movie with all those flower petals and up close shots of her glorious hair. (The death of spring after definitely wasn’t very Disney.) She’s a Queen ready to fight the New Gods for her rightful place in this world and I can’t wait!
Danielle: Isabelle kicked complete ass on this week’s Shadowhunters!! She went from being a weak girl, just coming off from her addiction to Yin Fen, being worried about constantly by big bro Alec, and not being her whole self. But then her little brother Max started Shadowhunter training, snuck out to battle Downworlders, and got caught by a creepy female vampire who sole purpose was to painfully strip Shadowhunters of their runes. Izzy’s big sister claws came out when she striked the vampire’s knife out of her hand and killed her on sight!! I screamed so loudly, “ YASSS IZZY!! That’s my girl!!” Queen Badass Isabelle Lightwood is back!!
April: Definitely Rosaline Capulet on Still Star-Crossed, no question. Benvolio tried to protect her, and instead of standing around letting him be her knight-in-shining-armor, she started running after the guy who could’ve killed them so they could catch him. Rosaline is a strong woman who doesn’t need anyone to take care of her and can stand on her own two feet. Furthermore, she has a huge heart, as is witnessed when she grieves the death of the man who nearly raped her. A strong woman who isn’t afraid to show emotion? Yes, please!
OTP of the Week
Lizzie: Rosvlio (Rosaline and Benvolio), on Still Star-Crossed. Finally working together, Rosaline and Benvolio kind of make you stop and go, okay, now KISS. But fine, they’re not there yet. I can wait. I think. How many episodes does this season have? Because I don’t want to wait that much, either.
Lyra: Freelin on The Originals. I was so afraid that Freya or Keelin would be killed in the season finale. There’s a reason why the “bury your gays” trope exists. But they survived! Even better, Freya expressed her fears over becoming a monster that Keelin would despise and Keelin reassured her that her love was stronger than that and that they would survive this. They stayed at each others side, helping the other in whatever way was needed. And when the dust finally settled they ended up together at the compound. The world is at their feet and I can’t wait to learn about everything they’ve done together when season five comes around again.
April: Since I still can’t choose between Rosvolio and Rosaline/Escalus on Still Star-Crossed (I just love both of them a lot, okay?) I’ve got to go with a platonic ship this week. Rosaline and Livia have a beautiful sister relationship that reminds me a lot of the dynamic with my own sister. Rosaline gave away her chance at freedom so that her sister could regain her title as a lady and no longer a servant. Livia begged that her sister not give up her chance at freedom and that she especially not do it for her. Rosaline chose to marry Benvolio and fake happiness with him so that her sister had a chance at making something of her life, and that is heartwarming.
Moment that made you collapse into a puddle of FEELS
Lyra: Elijah’s flashback sequence on The Originals. I’m not going to lie, at first I was angry with what Elijah was doing. Forgetting or erasing anything always ends up being a hot mess. But as the flashbacks started I was startled at the amount of pain that Elijah has endured and how much it weighed on him. I’ve never forgotten and I’ve watched every single episode. It’s just when they put it together in this manner I was shocked. And by the end of it…*deep breath*…I was a crying mess. When Marcel called Elijah’s name and his face lit up, it was like looking at a completely different man. Elijah is free for the first time in his life, not burdened by the pain of his past, and I can’t judge him for it. I would do the same thing if given the chance.
Danielle: Seeing and hearing Simon sing with his “band” on Shadowhunters brought back so many memories from reading the books. Except on the show, they played it off as a one-man-band kind of setup, but Alberto Rosende’s smooth voice made up for it. Clary is a very lucky girlfriend!
April: I had a lot of these moments this week, so I’ll name three that really stood out:
– From Still Star-Crossed: Benvolio Montague has no one and nothing. His best friends, Romeo and Mercutio, are both dead. His parents are dead. Everyone he has ever loved is gone and all he has left is his uncle, who hates him. Wade Briggs gave a masterful performance at conveying Benvolio’s utter devastation and loneliness, and it was endearing to watch.
– From Jamestown: The girls gave me all the feels this week. I absolutely loved that Jocelyn, Verity and Alice were given scenes that showed strong female bonds, especially in their town dominated by men. Verity staying with a drunk and desolate Jocelyn and trying to comfort her while keeping her quiet was beautiful, as was Alice appealing to Temperance Yeardley to help Jocelyn, and Temperance bonding with Jocelyn.
– From Doctor Who: Just seeing John Simms show up as The Master again made me squeal like a schoolgirl with her first crush. And for the first time in a very long time, I’m actually looking forward to the next Moffat episode.
Superhero of the Week
Lizzie: I kinda loved the ladies in Still Star-Crossed this week, from Isabella to Rosaline and even Livia, they were all doing anything but taking what life was throwing at them laying down – no, instead, they were doing what women of their station in their time weren’t expected to do – fighting.
April: Alice Kett on Jamestown. She’s the girl who gets stuff done, from trying to help out her friend Jocelyn, to going to her rapist brother-in-law so that Massinger can’t hurt the Sharrow family any longer. Without Alice, Silas and Henry wouldn’t have succeeded in getting a fixed rate for everyone’s tobacco crops. Without Alice, Madame Yeardley wouldn’t have found a common ground and sympathy for Jocelyn. Alice is the glue that holds all of these women together.
Quote of the Week
Lyra: “There is no end to the cruelty of men threatened by strong women. So what’s a queen to do? She gets on her knees, she takes what she don’t want to, and we watch in easy fucking judgment and pretend we’d do a single thing different in her shoes.” – Mr. Nancy/Anansi, American Gods
April: “What life would I have without my sister by my side?” – Rosaline to Livia, Still Star-Crossed
Lizzie: “Liv: I wanted to ask you something. What exactly are we? Justin: I’ve been meaning to bring that up. We’re zombies.” – iZombie.
WTF Moment of the Week
Lyra: Natalie being killed on iZombie. Her death was so sudden and left me feeling cheated. She was just trying to live her best life away from all the turmoil that she experienced when she was enslaved. Even worse, there was a genuine connection between her and Major. There always has been. And taking away Natalie is another loss, another opportunity down the drain, for two people that have had the worst of luck since the zombie outbreak started.
Danielle: Maia and Jace’s makeout session at the end of Shadowhunters. Ew. EW. EWW!! Hell no. I know that it was so Jace could play off Maia’s comment about him still being in love with Clary, but NO. WHY was there a need for a makeout session outside of the bar? They would never hook up in the book world. I know that when it comes to a show like this, we shouldn’t compare book to show, but in that moment, I felt disgusted. Especially since Maia and Jace just went at it for putting tracking devices on some Downworlders. It’s still a looong way until Clace happens, but no more random hookups between nemeses, please.
April: News was released yesterday that Still Star-Crossed has been cancelled ALREADY, and I am really, really infuriated, so this is my WTF moment of the week. ABC did little to no promotion of the show since it started. Very few people I know of, even massive fangirls, have heard of it or started watching. I told my mother to watch it because she loves Shakespeare things, and she hadn’t heard about it, either. So because ABC didn’t bother to promote the show (and possibly also because it’s a Shondaland production and Shonda has upset a lot of fans over the years – and maybe also because of the diversity of the show, but I really hope not,) it of course had low ratings. Instead of giving it a proper chance with proper promotion to receive proper ratings, ABC moved it to Saturday night, an absolutely abysmal decision. (The only show I can think of that has ever thrived on a Saturday night is Doctor Who.) Furthermore, it is announced only a day later that ABC has outright cancelled the show only three episodes in. They’ll air the rest of the season, thankfully, but that’s all we’ll get. This is such a beautiful show, with a glorious story-line, a phenomenal cast, gorgeous costumes and diversity galore, and ABC didn’t even give it a chance.
