Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.
The dog days of summer are here, and with them comes …not as much TV, so this week, we have a double dose of FEELS. But hey, many of our favorite summer shows are coming back next week, so hopefully, we’ll be back on a regular schedule!
For now, here are the picks for the last two weeks:
Badass Female Character of the Week
Lyra: Waverly Earp on Wynonna Earp. She took a chance last week and went undercover to prove to herself, Black Badge, and the rest of the team, that she was just as capable when it came to taking down the bad guys. We’re still not sure how much of this episode was Waverly but if we combine the slow motion and creepy intro with Waverly adaptability in the club later and her confession to Wynonna that everything wasn’t A-Ok with her, then you’ve got a badass Earp. Crossing fingers that more than 75% of this week’s Waverly was actually her and not Gooverly.
This week she had faith in her sister and took a huge risk by becoming Gooverly again. She was brave in the face of uncertainty and kept trying to save her sister and keep shit on track even though everything was falling apart around her. And at the end she had Wynonna’s back when she discovered something life changing about herself.
Nora: Spencer Hastings and Alex Drake on Pretty Little Liars. As PLL drew to a close this week the allusive A.D. was unmasked and honestly, only PLL could’ve pulled off the “evil twin” thing. Spencer and Alex dominate this finale and give a badass performance. From Alex kidnapping Spencer and trying to steal her life to Spencer picking her and Ezra’s cell locks and escaping, these two brought their badass game. While this category is “badass female character of the week,” I wouldn’t be able to talk about Spencer and Alex without tipping my hat to Troian Bellisario. Since day one, she’s been a force to reckon with on Pretty Little Liars, but this finale put her in the driver’s seat. She commands the entire finale and I’m just so proud of the badass actress and role model that she’s become over the past seven years on Pretty Little Liars. I’ll miss her.
Danielle: Scarlett really showed another, more positive side on this week’s Nashville. Before, she had been upset with a journalist for twisting her story around. Of course, she’d gotten upset, but what was even better was when she met up with a superfan whom had adored her and looked up to her. To upgrade on that positivity, Scarlett and Gunnar arranged a support group for those who were having issues with bullying in school. And by the very end of the meeting, the journalist Mackenzie finally came and shared her story too. It gave us a sense of hope that Scarlett can be a good person after all of the crap she’s been through on this show lately.
OTP of the Week
Lyra: Wayhaught on Wynonna Earp. Sure the scene where Nicole declared that she would shoot anyone for Waverly was cheesy as hell. But this couple deserves cheesy and all the other goodness that other couples get on TV. Plus, isn’t it true love to be that close to your girlfriend after she threw up black goo and a hell spawn? YES IT IS!
Nora: Ezria and Emison on Pretty Little Liars. Both OTP’s really got their moments in the spotlight during the series finale. First off, Ezria finally made it down the aisle and it just felt like the perfect ending to a seven season relationship. Aria and Ezra’s relationship has been building since literally the pilot and it was great to finally watch them become husband and wife. Emison also gave me such OTP feels in the Pretty Little Liars series finale. First, seeing them with their adorable twin daughters was a lot, but then Alison proposed to Emily and I can honestly say I think my heart exploded. This couple is the very definition of a “slow burn” and I’m so happy they finally got to a good place, together, in the finale. I’m going to miss Emison so much!
Lizzie: My Rosvolio heart! Why are they taking these two away from me, why? Wade Briggs and Lashana Lynch have so much chemistry and I just want them to fight about stupid or important things forever. But, since I’m only getting one season, I’m gonna have to settle with an epic love story, I guess. (WHEN HE SAID “YOU’RE ALL I HAVE”? OMG. FEELS)
Moment that made you collapse into a puddle of FEELS
Lyra: Ravi telling Liv he loved her in the morgue and Liv returning the sentiment on iZombie. This scene hit me in the feels, but not because I ship these two. It hit me in the feels because Ravi was taking a monumental risk by taking the cure and asking Liv to scratch him in the one place where it all started for them, the morgue. He was putting his life in her hands and trusting that she would care for him if anything went wrong like he’s always done for her. It was the moment where they reaffirmed their friendship and showed us why it’s lasted this many seasons.
Nora: Pretty Little Liars is just going to dominate my answers this week because I’m emotional that it’s over, but the Liars saying goodbye to Aria when she left for her honeymoon literally reduced me to a blubbering baby on the floor of my living room. Watching these five girls say goodbye to each other was the very definition of emotional. The tears were being contained until Alison uttered the line “For some reason this feels like the end of something.” Now I know why Sasha Pieterse kept saying she couldn’t get through her final line without crying, because I couldn’t even watch it, let alone talk about it. While Pretty Little Liars may have had its ups and down and the finale may have been disappointing for some, this scene really showed the true importance of the show: friendship. I wasn’t just reduced to a puddle of feels, I was reduced to a deep ocean of feels. I’m going to miss Aria, Spencer, Hanna, Emily and Alison.
Superhero of the Week
Nora: Mona Vanderwaal on Pretty Little Liars. She’s the true MVP of the entire series, even until the very end. After the Liars catch Mary and Alex Drake, Mona supposedly calls the cops (shocking we know), but it turns out she captures Mary and Alex and locks them in her own dungeon and plays dress up with them. Mona is still playing the game. Truly iconic. Even though Mona always hovered on the outside of the Liars friend group, she was always there when they needed her, a true superhero. Even in the series finale, she’s snooping around and always puts Hanna first. Mona Vanderwaal is the hero Pretty Little Liars always deserved.
Lizzie: Rosaline Capulet, Still Star Crossed. Just for the facial expressions, I swear to God. But fine, also because she always tries to do the right thing, even when the right thing might not be the most convenient thing for her.
Quote of the Week
Lyra: Bad Guy: “Something is coming.”
Wynonna: “Winter. Yeah, we got the memo.” – Wynonna Earp
Nora: “Sometimes I wish we were still in the basement. At least then we had some peace and quiet.” – Ella Montgomery, Pretty Little Liars
“Fine. Talk. But can you do it at a low volume? You’re scaring my ovaries.” – Hanna Marin, Pretty Little Liars
Danielle: “”Please tell me you’re not interested in her.” – Daphne
“You two are the only girls in my life.” – Deacon to Daphne and Maddie, Nashville
Lizzie: “You’re all I have.” Benvolio to Rosaline, Still Star-Crossed.
WTF Moment of the Week
Lyra: Waverly kissing Wynonna on Wynonna Earp. I’ve read enough fic and seen enough TV to recognize when someone is going to kiss someone else. So when I started recognizing the signs my insides started squirming in ‘ughhhh’. (That’s the only way to describe the awkwardness that was brewing in me.) I kept telling myself that this show was weird…but not that weird to have a demon press a romantic like kiss to her body’s sister! Thank the lord it was just a way to pass the demonic possession to someone else. I expect more awkward kisses to follow because this demon doesn’t care and all it’s looking to do is survive anyway it can.
Flash forward to this week’s episode and we call all freak out together about that rat smoothie. You’d think that with the kind of TV out there and the fact that I just watched John Wick 2, that I’d be desensitized to stuff like this. Nope. I was so disgusted when she made that rat smoothie and wanted to throw up when she poured it into that glass. It was…chunky. *gags*
Nora: Would it really be the series finale of Pretty Little Liars without them making the “WTF Moment of the Week?” Let’s see, a horse and Jenna figured out Spencer wasn’t really Spencer before her best friends did. Let me repeat, A HORSE is actually the smartest character in Rosewood. Also, beautiful Wren Kingston was reduced to an actual diamond?! I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about that! Oh, Pretty Little Liars, how I’ll miss you!
Danielle: Having Zach call his emotionally abusive ex over the phone to finally break up with him in front of Will, on Nashville. Like…..WHY? What was the point of having Will in the music room, listening in on this painful phone call between his new boyfriend and his ex? Was that supposed to make us feel badly for Zach? Because the only person in that moment I felt for was poor Jeff, Zach’s ex. He didn’t need to be called up like that just for Will to forgive Zach. Zach just looked like a bit of an asshole then.
