We all have our little side fun when it comes to Fandom. Beyond the music, the concerts, the enjoyment finding out little tid bits about the stars, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesnt have something else about the joy of fandom that they take on. For some, it is trying to snag that elusive pic with their fav, for others, maybe it is writing fan fiction about them, placing them in fantasical situations.
But for some in the One Direction fandom, that little ‘something else’ is a theory. And theory that some just wonder, but others take too far, tweet constantly, and turn into a frenzie at every opportunity. That Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson had a relationship, that management ‘forbid their love’ and that they are star crossed lovers destined to never be together.
Let me start off by saying, no, I am not a believer in the ‘Larry conspiracy’. To me, they were friends, and their friendship and banter was one of the best things about early 1D.
And since it seems to be necessary to mention whenever someone identifies themselves as an ‘anti’, no, I dont have a problem with the LGTBQ community, and if two people of the same sex want to be together, I am all for it! Love is love, and I couldnt care less who that love brings together, so long as they are happy.
There. Now that that is out of the way, I can continue.
Since early 1D days, the suspicious of ‘Larry’ has been all over. Louis, Harry, and even their families are bombarded with reply tweets of ‘Larry is real’ and other to the same effect any time they post a message online. Some fans have even used their rare and enviable opportunities to talk to either of these lads to ask them the invasive and personal question of ‘Is Larry real?’
After years of avoiding the topic of ‘Larry’, which has been brought up more than any refuted theory should, Louis Tomlinson has finally had enough.
In an interview with Dan Wooten of The Sun, Tomlinson sets the record straight, saying there is “obviously no truth” to the rumor. This, of course, has been stated endlessly and to death any time it is brought up, so the fact he even has to address it again is exhausting to even read.
“I’ve never actually been asked about it directly. It’s a funny thing. People can believe what they want to believe, but I just think it comes across some times as a little bit disrespectful, to the ones that I love, like Eleanor.” – Louis Tomlinson, the Sun
The ‘Larry Stylinson’ conspiracy is something that is well known even to those outside of the 1D fandom. When googling ‘conspiracies’, which you would think you bring up subjects like JFK’s murder or UFO’s, you find material on two boy banders.
“If you Google ‘conspiracy’ on iPhones, you’re going to get a conspiracy. So it’s one of these things that people love to buy into, but in reality obviously there’s no truth to it. Obviously,” – Louis Tomlinson, the Sun
Louis goes on to address the impact of this rumor on this friendship with Harry, and admits that they drifted apart mainly to keep it at bay. The difficulty of maintaining a friendship that is under such a microscope would be exhausting and tense, and take away much of the enjoyment you used to have with that person and their company. Not to mention the impact on those around you.
“I’m so protective over things like that, about the people I love. So it created this atmosphere between the two of us where everyone was looking into everything we did. It took away the vibe you get off anyone. It made everything a little bit more unapproachable. I think it shows that it was never anything ‘real’ if I can use that word.” – Louis Tomlinson, the Sun
There. He said it. It was never real, it is disrespectful, hurtful, and caused the demise of his friendship with Harry.
So, after 7 years, can we finally let this one go? Especially in light of trends such as #respectHarry, how about we actually put that into practice in all areas, and not just those that we see fit?
