Hey everybody and welcome back to Fangirlish’s NFL picks for Week 1 of the 2017 season! I’m Charles and joining me in picking this week’s slate of games are some of the talented ladies of Fangirlish who are some of the most knowledgeable and die-hard sports fans I know : Lizzie (@lizziethat) , Alyssa ( @alyssab_says ) and Katherine ( @k_rooney95 )
Many questions are left unanswered for the 2017 season? Can Tom Brady and the New England Patriots be stopped? Will Dax Prescott have a sophomore slump? Who will be the surprise team to emerge from the AFC? or NFC? We may not have those answers yet but we have our thoughts on who will win in the 15 games that make up Week 1 down below!*
* The Tampa Bay vs Miami game was rescheduled to Week 11 due to Hurricane Irma.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. New England Patriots (TNF)
Alyssa: Patriots 31, Chiefs 28 – While the Chiefs should certainly give the Patriots a run for their money, New England will still manage to pull this one out. Even with 40-year old Tom Brady minus his top receiver in Julian Edelman.
Lizzie: Patriots 28, Chiefs 14 – I think the Chiefs have a good defense, I just don’t think it’s good enough. I see no way they can win this one. (But I’d love to be proven wrong).
Charles: Patriots 32, Chiefs 10 – I have zero faith that this will be a close game. Even with Edelman out, Brady will just find someone else to destroy the Chiefs with (probably Gronk).
Katherine: Patriots 35, Chiefs 13 – Regardless of the fact that the Patriots are missing Edelman, Brady and the New England offense have proven time and time again that they can turn almost anyone into a threat on the field (for example : former college lacrosse player Chris Hogan)
Atlanta Falcons vs. Chicago Bears
Alyssa: Falcons 27, Bears 10 – Sure, the Bears could’ve been ripe for the upset over the defending NFC Champions. But they chose to start Mike Glennon over the rookie that outplayed him this preseason, Mitchell Trubisky, instead. The Bears should bring the defensive pressure, but they won’t have the offensive firepower to counter the Falcons.
Lizzie: Falcons 35, Bears 10 – Yeah, this one’s a no brainer. It’s not even that the Falcons are better, which they are, it’s that …Mike Glennon. I rest my case.
Charles: Falcons 31, Bears 16 – It’ll be more competitive than people expect but Atlanta is the better team and will pull away in the 4th.
Katherine: Falcons 45, Bears 17 – Between the uncertainty in the strength of the Bears starting quarterback and the Falcons desire to move on from the embarrassing defeat in the Super Bowl, I expect Matt Ryan to come out swinging.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins
Alyssa: Eagles 24, Redskins 20 – You never know when it comes to these division match-ups, and both the Eagles and Redskins are evenly matched. But I’ll give it to the Eagles with the upside.
Lizzie: Redskins 21, Eagles 17 – I don’t trust either of them, but I threw a coin and the Redskins came out on top. Besides, I like picking against everyone.
Charles: Eagles 21, Redskins 17 – Eagles have good things going while the Redskins feel like they are on a decline. This game will tell that story.
Katherine: Eagles 21, Redskins 17 – I agree with Charles that this game is going to be close, I think both teams are pretty evenly matched but I’m giving the Eagles the edge this week.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns
Alyssa: Steelers 31, Browns 7 – New young quarterback, same remake of what has always been a reliable disappointing Browns team. The Steelers will have a field day with the Browns as they bring a confident Browns fan base back down to Earth. Pretty quickly.
Lizzie: Steelers 28, Browns 9 – I hate picking the Steelers, but this is the Browns we’re talking about.
Charles: Steelers 31, Browns 10 – Same old sorry ass Browns.
Katherine: Steelers 24, Browns 7 – it’s going to take quite a bit to convince me that the Browns are going to be able to pull of anything more than a touchdown in this game
Arizona Cardinals vs. Detroit Lions
Alyssa: Cardinals 28, Lions 24 – Despite Matthew Stafford becoming the highest NFL player ever paid, the Lions won’t be able to buy this victory over the Cardinals. It should be a close game, but Arizona should overpower a Lions team that, despite Stafford and recent history, appears ripe for a decline.
Lizzie: Cardinals 31, Lions 21 – I think Stafford is a good QB, I just don’t think he’s good enough to beat the Cardinals right now.
Charles: Cardinals 24,Lions 17– You think this would be a high scoring affair but I have a feeling defense will be the key for this contest.
Katherine: Cardinals 31, Lions 10 – I think that Larry Fitzgerald is just going to be too much for the Lions defense to handle.
New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills
Alyssa: Bills 17, Jets 3 – I think I’d rather watch the Browns’ game. Do yourself a favor, change the channel — or take a nap. The Bills will win. But no one will care.
Lizzie: Bills 17, Jets 6 – Does anyone even care about reasons?
Charles: Bills 22, Jets 6 – This game is brought to you by zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Katherine: Bills 17, Jets 6 – The Jets are this season’s Browns.
Oakland Raiders vs. Tennessee Titans
Alyssa: Raiders 31, Titans 28 – Both of these teams are on the rise, and this should prove to be one of the more entertaining games of kickoff weekend. But I’ve got to give the edge to the Raiders, who have a shot at challenging New England down the road in the AFC.
Lizzie: Raiders 31, Titans 28 – I think this will be a close game, I just think the Raiders are the more consistent team.
Charles: Raiders 37, Titans 30 – Titans will be good this year but the Raiders are among the best in the NFL.
Katherine: Titans 28, Raiders 20 – Titans are going to pull this one out with a late surge led by Marcus Mariota .
Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Alyssa: Bengals 24, Ravens 20 – This should be a hard-fought game that’s typical with this division rivalry. But even with Joe Flacco’s return, I’ve got to go with the home team to pull off the victory.
Lizzie: Bengals 24, Ravens 21 – Joe Flacco isn’t enough for me to pick the Ravens on the road on this one. It’s Joe Flacco, not someone elite.
Charles: Ravens 17, Bengals 13 – A hard-hitting game but one I believe will be won late by Flacco and his crew.
Katherine: Ravens 20, Bengals 13 – I think the Bengals are going to start this season off slowly and Flacco is playing with quite a chip on his shoulder these days
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans
Alyssa: Texans 21, Jaguars 13 – Unfortunately for the Jaguars, Blake Bortles is still their quarterback. Texans should have a feast. That, and they’re riding an emotional high following Hurricane Harvey. This one’s for Houston!
Lizzie: Texans 20, Jaguars 13 – Look, the Texans don’t have Brock Osweiler anymore, yes, but the Jaguars have Blake Bortles.
Charles: Texans 27, Jaguars 20 – I think the Texans will be bad this season but for one game and for Houston, they will play their hearts out to win.
Katherine: Texans 34, Jaguars 17 – Houston is going to pull out all of the stops to win this game and bring their city together, JJ Watt is going to be even more of a nightmare on the field than normal and Blake Bortles is going to pay the price.
Indianapolis Colts vs. Los Angeles Rams
Alyssa: Rams 17, Colts 6 – Colts fans, you worried yet? Andrew Luck’s absence is anything short of catastrophic news for the Colts in their season opener. This is just the kind of game that second year quarterback Jared Goff needs to finally get his first win as a starter.
Lizzie: Rams 20, Colts 9 – The Colts without Andrew Luck are just… not even good.
Charles: Rams 23, Colts 7 – No Luck means No Luck for the Colts on Sunday.
Katherine: Rams 20, Colts 13 – Without Luck, the Rams will be able to steal this game from the Colts which otherwise would’ve gone their way.
Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers
Alyssa: Packers 38, Seahawks 28 – This is one of those games that you just know it’s going to be an offensive show on both sides of field. But this is Aaron Rodgers. And my gut is telling me that the Packers have got this in the bag, though it’ll be close early.
Lizzie: Packers 28, Seahawks 31 – I can’t bet against Rodgers.
Charles: Packers 34, Seahawks 28 – Green Bay always seems to have the Seahawks number in the regular season and it wouldn’t shock me if this is no different. Rodgers has another great game in victory.
Katherine: Packers 38, Seahawks 27 – This game definitely looks to be the best of the opening week. I think Rodgers and the Packers assert themselves as the NFC favorite early on by convincingly beating Wilson and the Seahawks.
Carolina Panthers vs. San Francisco 49ers
Alyssa: Panthers 24, 49ers 6 – I feel like I’m being generous giving the 49ers six points. As the Panthers fight to reestablish themselves in the NFC, this is the kind of game that they can’t afford to — and won’t — lose.
Lizzie: Panthers 21, 49ers 3 – I laughed at loud at Charles’ prediction. But yeah, the 49ers are bad, bad, bad.
Charles: Panthers 24, 49ers 0 – Panthers are a way better team and show it against a rebuilding 49ers unit.
Katherine: Panthers 17, 49ers 6 – I don’t see much coming from either side in this game…
New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys (SNF)
Alyssa: Giants 28, Cowboys 27 – These kickoff games between the Giants and Cowboys are always entertaining. And they’re never what you expect. You’d believe the Cowboys would win, even potentially minus Ezekiel Elliott (which isn’t the case.) But the Giants almost always show up against Dallas. In Dallas.
Lizzie: Giants 31, Cowboys 28 – I think the Cowboys are the better team, but something is tell me the Giants are gonna pull this one off in one of those ridiculous ways they sometimes manage, so I’m going with my gut.
Charles: Cowboys 31, Giants 28 – I see Dallas pulling off the W somehow. This is a new era in big D and Prescott is ready to avenge last season’s disappointment.
Katherine: Giants 34, Cowboys 28 – It pains me more than anything to ever give the W to the Giants, but I think they’ve got the better edge in this game. I think the Cowboys are going to take some time to get back into their groove this year.
New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings (MNF)
Alyssa: Saints 34, Vikings 27 – The Vikings may have a good defense, but it’s no match for the high-flying passing attack from Drew Brees. This is one of those games that has the potential to be a shoot-out.
Lizzie: Saints 35, Vikings 27 – Drew Brees. DREW BREES. I don’t think the Vikings defense has any shot at actually stopping him for good and I don’t think they can keep up.
Charles: Saints 41, Vikings 31 – High-scoring affairs are Drew Brees is bag so expect…..like 5 TDs and 400 yards from him.
Katherine: Saints 35, Vikings 28 – This game promises to be a good one, but my money’s on Drew Brees. I think the Saints will make a good run this year.
Los Angeles Chargers vs. Denver Broncos (MNF)
Alyssa: Broncos 24, Chargers 17 – While I’m not overly confident in this Broncos offense, I’m extremely confident in this Broncos defense. They’ll take care of business while the offense does enough to pull out the season-opening victory.
Lizzie: Broncos 24, Chargers 13 – Let’s never speak of Brock Osweiler and the Broncos as a thing that is happening again. This is Trevor Siemian’s team, and that’s good enough for a win on this one.
Charles: Broncos 16, Chargers 10 – I wanted to pick the upset but I think Denver can hold on for a W in their first opening day Monday Night game in forever.
Katherine: Broncos 28, Chargers 13 – Brock returns! I think that the Broncos have this one regardless of who is their quarterback.
