#IDontMind Starting the Conversation, Do You?

“Your mind matters. Talk about it.”

Mental health is something that touches almost every single person in the world in some kind of way. Whether it’s a loved one, a co-worker, a friend or even you, there is someone struggling or coping with a mental illness at this moment. Most people are scared to talk about it for many reasons. They’re scared they’ll be judged or made fun of, that they’ll be a burden to their loved ones, or worst of all, that they’ll be met with hate, disbelief or belittling.

Chris Wood’s newest campaign, I Don’t Mind, is all about starting that conversation and ending the stigma that surrounds mental health. “I am just trying to turn something horrible into something positive for other people,” Wood said in an interview with TV Insider in early October. “If everyone just waits and says, ‘Well, it’s too hard,’ then the conversation never starts. But with effort, persistence and, I think, important messaging for a cause that needs to be pushed out into the front lines, you find people who will help you.”

Collaborating with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Wood continues to fight every day to give everyone a voice and the courage to ask for help. Wood’s I Don’t Mind campaign began October 1st, coinciding with the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. “I Don’t Mind” t-shirts and hats were on sale with 100% of the proceeds going to help fund NAMI’s work. The campaign was immediately met with huge support. Receiving huge backing from Melissa Benoist and Edward Schmit, Wood’s campaign opened the door for so many to express their feelings and struggles they or their loved ones have dealt with. Celebrities like Grant Gustin, David Harewood, Kevin Smith, Jeremy Jordan, Misha Collins, Zelda Williams and Clark Gregg (and many more) were some of the first to speak out and share their stories. I Don’t Mind even reached schools and classrooms across the country, opening the eyes and ears of America’s youngest.

In a world with so much violence and hate, movements like I Don’t Mind reminds us all what it truly means to be human and that we need to take care of each other, no matter what. #IDontMind admitting that I have struggled with anxiety my entire life and that I have sought help and it’s made all the difference. Asking for help is the biggest sign of strength anyone could ever show.

While the I Don’t Mind t-shirt and hat sales may be over, you can still support this amazing cause by keeping the conversation going. You can speak up on social media using the IDM verbiage. You can also take the pledge and say “I Don’t Mind” and help others who are struggling or even yourself by showing that they have someone they can lean on and talk to.
