You know us, we’re always excited when books that we love are optioned for movies. It’s a time to celebrate. We know it doesn’t necessarily mean that that it will make it’s way to production, but the possibilities are exciting.
Jeff Zentner’s The Serpent King is not your average book, but that’s part of what makes it amazing. The book has now been optioned for film by SuVen Harris Entertainment in a planned collaboration with Magnolia Entertainment.
That’s pretty damn exciting.
If you aren’t familiar with The Serpent King, you need to read the book. It’s been out since 2016 and is pretty spectacular.
Dill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes, and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father’s extreme faith and very public fall from grace.
The only antidote to all this venom is his friendship with fellow outcasts Travis and Lydia. But as they are starting their senior year, Dill feels the coils of his future tightening around him. Dill’s only escapes are his music and his secret feelings for Lydia, neither of which he is brave enough to share. Graduation feels more like an ending to Dill than a beginning. But even before then, he must cope with another ending- one that will rock his life to the core.
Jeff commented on Twitter in regards to the option.
Oh Jeff. The movie will be produced by Matt Sutherland and Brittany Harris.
We’ll be following this closely.
