Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows that made us laugh, cry, go awwwand, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.
So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:
Badass Female Character of the Week
Lariel: Nyssa al Ghul, Arrow. Katrina Law & her character were some of the best things to come out of the S3 slog that was the League of Assassins storyline, and it was great to see her back in Star City. I got a kick out of her teasing Oliver and Felicity about being a sister-wife.
Shelby: Maia Roberts, Shadowhunters. Thanks to Alisha Wainwright being promoted to a season regular, we have been seeing a lot more of Maia, which makes me very happy. She was a total badass this week by owning her sex life and standing up to a man who was trying to attack and demean her because of it. In a time when it is still so rare to see women talking openly about sex and their sex lives on television, it was empowering and refreshing to see Maia take pride in who she is and who she chooses to sleep with.
Janelle: Monse Finnie, On My Block. Monse is a curious, passionate, and intelligent high school freshman who is adjusting to her newly grown breasts and the new pressures of a violence soaked community. As a character, she is balanced and resistant to the boxes girls of color are put in.
I watched the first three episodes this week and a badass moment that stands out to me is when Monse has an issue with Cesar, she goes to him directly. She doesn’t pass notes or play games (like I did as a freshman– in COLLEGE!). Monse also embraces the new girl on her block as a friend, NOT as competition. What a BAMF!
Erin: Nic, The Resident. She’s the nurse that I would want in the hospital. The one that won’t stop fighting for you. The one that doesn’t give up on you. She’s just bad ass and she doesn’t know it. But we see it. We are in awe of it. I adore her badass nature and the vulnerability that she shows too.
OTP of the Week
Kayla: Conic, The Resident. Man! The feels I got from them this week!!! Conrad admitted to Nic that she is the love of his life and that she more than earned getting to keep his mother’s ring he gave her – despite them not being together anymore. NIC IS THE LOVE OF CONRAD’S LIFE! Pass it on!!
Lariel: TheRoy, Arrow. Wow, I found two things to love in an episode of this show! That doesn’t happen too often any more. But I’ve always loved this pairing, ever since Roy first stole Thea’s purse all those years ago. They were part of the team that was Peak Arrow, and I am glad they’re getting away from Star City on their own quest while the rest of the S6 mess spools out. Perhaps we’ll get a chance to see these two as guest stars one more time in the Arrowverse.
Janelle: I am going to cheat just a little bit and say the OTPs of TImeless! Both Lyatt, who took it to the mattress this week and Riya were fantastic to watch. I love when a ship is developed with nuance. And even though I wish we would have had a bit more time with Lyatt as an actual couple, I like that Jessica’s return adds some deep drama. It was a great smooches filled with for the OTPs of Timeless. My heart is happy.
Erin: For me – this one is a hard one. So many shows I love and so many things I don’t want to admit I love. But for me, seeing Thea and Roy finding their way to each other was one thing. But ultimately, Conic (The Resident) is my favorite. Why? Because no matter what happens, she’s the love of his life and he didn’t want the ring back.
Moment that made you collapse into a puddle of FEELS
Kayla: The death of Lily Kendall on The Resident left me crying in the floor. That girl was murdered by her oncologist because she asked for a second opinion and Nic is gonna be made to take the fall for it. Lily did what she had the right to do, and Dr. Hunter MURDERED her. Lily deserves better! I was in floor crying with Conrad after Lily died.
And of course Nic being made to take the fall for it is beyond wrong. She only did as she was told. And Dr. Hunter only did that for revenge. Dr. Hunter deserves the inside of a prison cell. Nic deserves better too!
Lariel: Aaron Glassman’s flashback about his dead daughter in The Good Doctor. I’d been on the edge of tears from the moment he’d told Shaun about his tumor, but this pushed me right over as he remembered how his little girl answered the words “I love you” with “I love you more.”
Naomi: The ending of The Good Doctor. Shaun and Aaron walking to Dr. Andrews’ office to tell the truth was so sad because we know what it could mean for both of them. Even though it could be the end for them at San Jose, the scene captured a new beginning for their relationship. Shaun’s simple recitation of “I love you/ I love you more” and Aaron’s reaction to it gave us the perfect emotional season ending gut punch.
Janelle: Oh, yes, I need to talk about this! On UnREAL Quinn dominates and wins the respect that the disgusting Gary has refused to give her. Chet, the man who ultimately rejected Quinn, is very turned on by her power. Chet follows Quinn to her office and tries to have sex with her. She rejects him. This interaction happens:
Chet: “I miss you Quinnie. I really miss you.” *long pause*
Quinn: “I know you do. But, you chose easy.”
Cue me, bursting into tears. I’ve been called “too much,” “difficult,” “challenging,” or some other sexist synonym by every man I’ve ever dated. I have also made myself more “easy” so that I wasn’t too intimidating or threatening. Quinn says this truth with such sorrow and insight that I just can not handle it. All the ways that who I am is not a good fit for the fairytale existence that I’ve been shown my entire life come crashing onto me in this scene. It’s very powerful and if you have not had a chance to check out UnREAL, I highly recommend it. Especially if, like me, you’ve never been easy.
Erin: The Royals, when Devin showed up to the dance for Becky. And seeing the look on Eleanor’s face when he showed up. She did good. Eleanor did really good. And seeing her know that she can be better… that she is better…
Charles: When Simmons said that her and Fitz were Invincible on Agents of SHIELD. Just more proof that their love can withstand anything that is thrown their way.
Superhero of the Week
Lyra: The entire episode of Supernatural‘s “Scoobynatural” wins for me when it comes to superhero of the week. It helped erase the shit storm that is the news lately by giving me the most epic of crossovers. My childhood self would be dead if she got to see the magic that the Supernatural writers were able to make by putting this together. Seriously….I might just go and watch it again…
Lariel: Mine wore a lab coat this week. Shaun Murphy, The Good Doctor. Aaron wanted him to stop searching for a solution to his tumor, but Shaun didn’t give up. That’s what heroes do. They persist, always. And because Shaun persisted, Aaron has hope after all.
Erin: For me, it’s Conrad on The Resident. Why? Because loving someone, it’s not easy. But loving them enough to let them go… that’s true selflessness. And that makes a person a hero.
Quote of the Week
Lariel: “Let’s not squabble too early in our partnership. There’ll be plenty of time for us to stab each other in the backs later.” – The Mad Hatter, Gotham
Naomi: “At some point in your career, you’re going to kill someone. And I hope for your sake there’s a doctor out there who still believes in you when you do.” – Dr. Melendez to Morgan, The Good Doctor
Janelle: “Write this down. There is some shit I will not eat.” – Quinn, UnREAL
Erin: “Keep it. You earned it.” – Conrad, The Resident
Charles: “Our daughter is going to marry some space goon and give birth to a Deke!!” – Fitz, Agents of SHIELD
WTF Moment of the Week
Lariel: Hmm. For me the WTFs didn’t come on television but online. We had some peak cyberbullying this week, with Laura Ingraham’s eventually costly jab at Parkland student activist David Hogg and quite a bit of shade thrown at Fangirlish over Krypton. But it also took a very personal turn for me when I saw an online friend and fellow author tweet that she was deleting all of her Legends of Tomorrow tweets and putting her fics on hiatus.
“Bullying works. Pass it on,” she wrote before going radio silent. I know this person struggles with depression, and she’s felt targeted by other Legends fans for her dislike of the Ava Sharpe character (one I happen to share, but that’s a whole ‘nother matter). While trying to learn what happened to her, I learned that another Legends fic author deleted *her* Tumblr account and all her fics on AO3. She’s also vanished. Whether it’s Ingraham or the Krypton supporters or those who drove my fellow authors into silence, the message has been, “Shut the hell up. You don’t get to have an opinion.”
Well, no. We are NOT shutting the hell up. Whether we’re wanting to talk about gun control or dislike of shows or season arcs or characters or, in some cases, slimy actors and creators, we don’t HAVE to shut up. And we won’t.
Janelle: Wow, yes. I agree with Lariel’s inspiring words above. My WTF moment was also online, on twitter. I literally exclaimed what the f*ck, when I read Roseanne Bar’s tweet regarding her defense of Trump.
It is so angering to me that Roseanne has been resurrected, but Sweet/Vicious couldn’t get a second season. I think we as fans need to come to a reckoning with our power to protest by boycotting shows. I know it’s not what we want. We WANT to have the show creators and stars act ethically so we can continue to adore programming.
But, Roseanne crossed a line (probably already had long-ago) when she tweeted the flat-out lie that Trump is rescuing children from trafficking. I work with sex-trafficking survivors every day, so this outrageous lie hurts me more than others, but they ALL are harmful. She needs to go and the show she stars in needs to be canceled.
Erin: ABC’s move to renew Roseanne. How we are expected to support someone who considers themselves a reincarnation of Hitler? Ya, hell no. There are things that should be above money and ABC failed the world as a whole by their move.
