‘The Royals’ Season 4 Review: Robert’s Crazy and Sh*t Got Really Regal

Overall Impression

The thing about The Royals is that you never know what you are getting and you never know if that person is who they claim to be and if there is something you are not seeing about them. What you do know is that you are in for a ride with whatever personality or adventure that these characters are on. You think your family is crazy? Nope. They are a walk in the park compared to these people.

And we’re living for it.

This season of The Royals was drama, drama, drama. Though it was somewhat predictable, you can’t figure anything out. Why? Because they do a good job of presenting you the story and also telling you nothing at the same time.

We know that The Royals is not realistic, but it makes us feel like we’re getting an inside look at royalty and who doesn’t want that. But as much as we loved this season, it wasn’t with out issues. There were a lot, but in that same breathe, there weren’t enough to make us hate the show in any way.  But in order for The Royals to maintain itself, it needs to find a way to be less predictable, while giving the watcher everything that they want.

Over the seasons the show has grown beyond what we ever thought it would, but the thing that it had lacked the previous seasons was character growth. Characters seemed to stay stuck in time, never resolving their issues. It finally felt as though characters were growing, time was passing, and everyone was finally figuring their shit out.

But even figuring their shit out – that only moved them forward a little bit. Why do I say that? Well, that would be because there are plot holes and unbelievable story lines, but we can look past all those. Why? The Royals did something right since season one. They made you care or hate every character in this show. And that my friends is the ultimate mind fuck/manipulation.

We can’t quit it because these people are our friends.

Favorite Episode

With Mirth in Funeral and With Dirge in Marriage  – The finale culminates in a day that will change the family and the nation forever. A burgeoning uprising has Robert suspicious of everyone, as the rest of the family unites to combat a formidable foe.

Why is it our favorite? Because we find out so much in a season that we couldn’t understand what the fuck was happening, we found out so much. But we also found out so little. Here’s the thing about The Royals – it gives us nothing with giving us everything. It draws you in, it makes you want to cheer for characters while hating them. But what it also does is unfold things in the most surprising way. I feel like the final episode of the season made you fall in love with it, but gets you so mad that you can’t give up on it. It gave you a happy ending with Eleanor and Jasper, but made you so mad over Robert and Willow.

Least Favorite Episode

Black As His Purpose Did The Night Resemble – A total blackout in London sparks chaos. Willow’s feelings for Robert grow stronger. Eleanor opens the palace to the public and Jasper finds himself in the middle of a riot.

Why is this the least favorite? Robert. It was our least favorite because of Robert. Robert is ridiculous. It felt like an overplayed, over forced episode that we could have gone without.

Because – seriously – there is no way anyone is getting into the palace because the lights went out. Ya, no. This is just ridiculous.

So ridiculous.

WTF Moments

Anything having to do with Robert. I don’t think that we’ve even scratched the surface of his issues. We don’t know what is wrong with him, why he’s become the piece of shit that he is, or why he’s manipulating everyone in his path. At a certain point one has to wonder – does he realize that he is king? Does he realize that he doesn’t need to keep trying to prove that he doesn’t have a limp dick? I guess for me the biggest thing about Robert is that he has no qualms about hurting everyone in his path and it has yet to make sense as to why. Daddy issues? But Lord, get a shrink.

Willow. Poor stupid, stupid Willow. Look, I know we can all get blinded by a hot guy in power. We all do it. It’s life. But the truth is – we always thought Willow was smarter than that. We always thought that she wasn’t going to be the girl who got blinded by the guy. She was supposed to be badass. She was supposed to be strong and fierce. She was not supposed to be distracted by a man. She was supposed to be the fierceness and show us how to not let anything get to us. But she fell for the man with power. She got distracted. She got manipulated. It hurts.

Jaspers Dad. Oh lord, I thought I had Dad issues. The thing is that any Dad issues we all have – well, we all have a come to know by watching The Royals, Jasper wins. He gets the brownie (Notting Hill reference. Go watch it). We’re not sure how Jasper has turned out as okay as he is and we all know that he’s pretty fucked up. But when you look at his Dad and you see that he’s like – manipulated his way into everything – including sleeping with Dutchie… well every moment with him is a what the fuck moment.

  • We can’t with Sebastian. We know we’re supposed to take him with a grain of salt, cause you know – is what it is. Sebastian fills like a filler in the show, which saddens us, because we thought he had the potential to be something great.
  • How long will they drag out this Robert storyline without giving us a solution? Like we all know he’s bat shit crazy. We’re ready for him to fall.
  • That cliffhanger. Like fuck off. There better be another season.
  • Lets give the Queen something more to do with her life. Like she’s more than her vagina. Shit, she’s had to have made a contribution.
  • We’d like Cyrus to be more than a punch line. Like the man needs to do more with his life and the character deserves more development.
  • Why does it seem like everyone in this show overly horny? They get laid enough.
  • We still don’t have Ophelia closure.

  • The growth of Jasper and Eleanor’s relationship was one of the highlights of the season. These two are what we hold out for.
  • Even though we hate Robert, we have to admit that Max Brown plays him so creepily we’re about it.
  • They kept us going for a long damn time wondering what the hell was going on, but we’re about it.
  • We felt like there was a lot of character growth with Eleanor. Hell even some with Liam – but like give us more.

We’re still waiting to see if The Royals is renewed for another season, and we’re hoping that it does. Why? Because we need to know what is going to happen and how they are finally going to take down Robert. Also

The Royals airs on E!. It stars Elizabeth Hurley, William Moseley, Alexandra Park, Jake Maskall, Tom Austen, Genevieve Gaunt, and Max Brown.
