Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.
So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:
Badass Female Character of the Week
Lizzie: So spoiler ban for Avengers: Endgame is over and I can finally talk Pepper Potts coming in as FREAKING RESCUE to save her husband, and not just that, fight literal aliens. It was a full-circle moment that was completely earned, and that, even if Pepper never shows up again on an MCU movie, was a fitting way to pave the way to the new generation of superheroes. Because never forget, suit or not, Pepper Potts is a goddamn hero.
Also, I’m going to add Chloe Decker on Lucifer to the list, if nothing else because Lauren German was given good material this season and she ABSOLUTELY KILLED IT.
Erica: Nic, The Resident. The writers kind of slaughtered Nic’s character during half of this season and don’t even get me started on Alec, but things ended on a much better note. Nic went through so much between her addict sister facing multi-organ, her deadbeat dad, and things with Conrad not going so great. She came out strong, though, because nothing can keep Nic Nevin down. She handled everything in stride and knew when to ask for help which is sometimes the greatest way to show strength. Nic is my hero, y’all!
Mimi: Gwen Verdon. If you all are not watching Fosse/Verdon on FX, you need to start today. It’s a biopic miniseries based on the book Fosse by Sam Wasson. If you are a theater geek like me, you will love it. If you love Bob Fosse, you will love it. This entire series gives center stage to Gwen, whose influence was in everything Bob Fosse did. Gwen was the driving force behind Fosse, his muse, his right hand. she basically made Cabaret. She was a badass. #itwasafineaffair #meinheir
Ashley: I’m giving it up to Missandei of Naath on Game of Thrones this week. She faced death with courage. She’s always been a person of quiet strength and I’ve always admired her for that.
McKenzie: This week is Maze from Lucifer. I mean the girls a demon. By definition alone she is badass. She might have a skewed sense of right and wrong but you can’t say that she doesn’t kick ass and take names.
Jasmine: I’m going with Diana on this week’s episode of A discovery of witches. She knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to fight for it. Matthew’s mother thought she’d be able to scare her away by taking her hunting. She was totally unfazed by it and I loved when she said “can we go home now?”
Janelle: I agree with Ashley that Missandei of Naath is a complete badass. While I am still pissed to high heaven about her death (why the heck was she on that ship and not in a protected status as Dany’s number one!) the way she used her last words to tell her people to bring fire down on King’s Landing is incredible. In my mind, she’s on that beach, just waiting for Greyworm to come join her.
OTP of the Week
Jasmine: Diana and Matthew on A Discovery of Witches I love the two of them and their chemistry is so beautiful. I was so happy when Matthew came back and finally admitted his feelings! Plus that love scene!
Erica: Sharpwin, New Amsterdam. People are probably getting tired of me and this ship (especially when it might never happen) but these two are my OTP! We only got a brief glimpse of them this week but that is all they need to blow up with screen with their chemistry and compassion. Helen and Max respect each other and care for one another in such a deep way that their ship cannot be denied. It will happen someday, just hopefully not from cheating because I really wouldn’t support that.
I’d like to mention Conic (The Resident) as well because we almost lost them and I’m so happy they’re ok! Alec was the worst idea that show ever had and nothing should ever come between Conrad and Nic again.
Lizzie: Jaime and Brienne, on Game of Thrones.Yes, even if the episode ended the way it ended, because despite the fact that the writers are trying to trick us, I don’t for a moment think Jaime actually left because he cares more about Cersei. Either way, the first few scenes these two have together, the moment where they’re standing face to face and they FINALLY give in to the feelings everyone with eyes could see they have for each other, that moment was enough to write a few sonnets. It was a culmination of an arc that was all about not just loving someone, but how much respect is tied to love, and what letting yourself truly love someone who sees and accepts all of you is like.
Mimi: Dude Erica! You are preaching to the deacons choir girl! #sharpwin is errrrrthang right now!! Can Georgia just die already so we can get on with it. Helen will raise Luna with Max. Also Helen will heal Max’s cancer. I love them. Their chemistry is ahhmazing. Seriously this was the plan from the beginning. #newamsterdam
Ashley: Jaime and Brienne on Game of Thrones are ALWAYS my OTP of the week, but this week, they are officially CANON! Their love scene was so beautiful, so perfect, so them! I think what I love the most about their relationship is how equal they are, how much they respect each other, and how their relationship is about not only acceptance, but also about pushing your partner to be the best version of themselves they can be. It’s. So. BEAUTIFUL.
Janelle: Captain Holt and Kevin are the most underrated ship on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This season has done such a good job of peeling back some new layers of their relationship. On the “Cinco de May” episode, Kevin gets brought in the heist shenanigans! I love this stoic and erudite couple with my whole heart.
Moment That Made You Collapse Into a Puddle of FEELS
Erica: During the end of New Amsterdam when all the doctors handed out Max’s homemade insurance cards to people all over NYC because he was too sick to do it. Each character has experienced a lot of growth throughout the season but this was that moment when it was clear how much Max means to the community of New Amsterdam. Like, he better not die from his cancer because I will be so mad!
Mimi: Umm so I watched a movie called Wine Country on Netflix and it’s hilarious and has a pretty much all female cast. The protagonist is turning 50 and her friends head to Napa Valley to celebrate and reminisce about their 20 year friendship. Guys it has Tina Fey, Amy Pholer, Rachel Dretch, and Mya Rudolph just to name a few. It had me in my feels Because female friendships are real and should be validated and celebrated on screen. Everyone is going through something and is all caught up in their own shit but at the end of the day, they all have each other’s backs.
Ashley: Jaime and Brienne’s love scene on Game of Thrones. I was so shocked when it aired that I just watched the scene gaping. Now when I watch it, my heart just melts and I collapse into a puddle of tears.
McKenzie: Sonny from Seal Team when he was pleading with Jason to go save Ray. If anyone could understand what Ray was feeling it was Sonny and it was heart wrenching. To see the desperation on his face wanting to go save their brother who had gotten himself stuck in enemy territory on an op. I can’t imagine how conflicting that was for them all. They have a mission to complete that will save thousands of lives or go save their brother who is surrounded by enemies who will kill him.
Charles : Gendry’s failed proposal to Arya on Game of Thrones. I get why Gendry proposed to her. I get why Arya turned it down, not wanting to be a lady to anyone. I understand it all. Still doesn’t mean, it hurt like hell and left me a emotional mess.
Jasmine: Brienne crying as she begged Jamie to stay on Game of Thrones I have never seen her so vulnerable before and it hurt so much because she was begging him and he just left!
Lizzie: The last few seconds of Lucifer season 4. Like, I’d been waiting for ages, and then I got it, and then the ripped my heart out and I might never recover.
Quote of the Week
Lyra: “Cheddar, you duplicitous bitch.” – Captain Holt, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Lizzie: Edgar: Mom, Dad, if you’re done fighting. We all know you’re coming with me, so… – Whiskey Cavalier
Mimi: Helen: I’m sending you home Max, so you can get better. It’s time for you to go home. –New Amsterdam
Ashley: “To climbing mountains.” – Jaime and Tyrion Lannister
Charles: “One thing you should know is that a dog is no match for Jake Peralta!” – Jake , Brooklyn 99
Jasmine: “From this moment we will always be one” – Matthew, A Discovery of Witches
WTF Moment of the Week
Lizzie: Absolutely every second of that Game of Thrones episode, but ESPECIALLY Sansa telling The Hound that she is strong BECAUSE she was violated. No, bitch. Sansa was always strong, that’s why she’s here. Pain doesn’t cause strength, if anything, it reveals it.
Gillian: Anything that happened after the first 30 minutes of Game of Thrones. These episodes have done nothing to change my mind on the series as a whole and I’m dreading the end even more. I don’t know why I’m investing my time on this.
Erica: The drug addict anesthesiologist, The Resident. Y’all, I don’t even remember that character’s name but I hated her from her first corny joke. They showed us she was a thief and an addict in her first episode but my jaw about hit the floor when she overdosed during the surgery! She better be so fired and never shows her face on The Resident ever again. Heck, it’s probably her fault one of those characters are dead. And, let me add that cliffhanger to my WTF moment from this week. How are they gonna flatline Nic’s Dad or sister and now show us which one? It’s gonna be one long summer!
Mimi: So I just started watching Lord of the flies.. oops I mean The Society on Netflix. Seriously guys, WTF is happening?? Anyone? It’s like that episode of Buffy where everyone disappears.
Ashley: Y’all are going to get tired of me talking about Game of Thrones, but you’ll only have to deal with it for 2 more weeks. When Jaime left Winterfell. I was first shocked that this was even happening. Then I was angry that the writers decided to toss Jaime’s character development out the window like so many Bran Starks. Then I was heartbroken because I love Brienne so much and I felt her pain so deeply. Then I was heartbroken again because I realized that this was because Jaime felt like he couldn’t be happy with Brienne while Cersei lives and would be queen of the ashes as long as she got to be queen. And I think he’s right. Now, Brienne, go get your man, slap some sense into him, then help him take out The Wicked Queen of Westeros.
McKenzie: This week’s episode of Game of Thrones. The whole episode I just had a confused look on my face and frequently said WTF. It’s like the writers just ignored the last seven seasons of storytelling and character building and where shooting darts in the dark to see what stuck.
Jasmine: Every single minute of All that we destroy from the Hulu anthology Into the dark. Seriously! It was so fucked up and I’m still not over it! Aurora Perrineau is one of my favorites so watching her character Ashley get killed over and over was so hard to watch!
Janelle: THE STARBUCKS COFFEE CUP.
