Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows & movies that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.
So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:
Badass Female Character of the Week
Lyra: EVERY SINGLE BADASS FROM BIRDS OF PREY! Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Renee Montoya and Huntress. Each were such a unique, wonderful, explosive part of this girl squad and I am living for more of it. I might just go and watch it again! *throws that money at movie*
Lizzie: Miss Americana came out on Netflix last weekend, so I’m ready to talk about how many times Taylor Swift slayed me during that. I have always enjoyed her, but I didn’t expect this documentary to be about how we – as women – should learn to move past what the world expects of us. I also didn’t expect it to be so political. Count me in as a fan now. I’m in.
Emily: Kesha’s High Road came out this week and wowee did it make me feel every single way! My favorites are Tonight, Cowboy Blues, and Birthday Suit, but let’s be honest, they’re all amazing.
McKenzie: Ginger Lopez from Katy Keene. She is a fierce confident queen who is no longer taking shit from people and I’m here for it. She is fighting for her dreams and won’t let anyone tell her she doesn’t have the talent.
Jessica: Grace Ryder, 9-1-1: Lone Star. She completely saved the day by figuring out the combination to the safe. And she figured it out because she knows what year UT won the national championship. Saving lives and knowing sports? Yeah, she was definitely my badass female of the week.
Gillian: Let’s give it up for Shakira and Jennifer Lopez for putting on one hell of a Super Bowl Halftime Show! Way to prove that age is nothing but a number! Honorable mention goes to Demi Lovato for a stunning rendition of the National Anthem as well!
Naomi: Iris West-Allen, The Flash: This week, the Iris West-Allen story we’ve all been waiting for came to fruition. She got the scoop on a huge meta-human conspiracy and dodged UV light bullets to do it! No Flash to the rescue for this badass!
Jasmine: I’m going with Nurse Joy on All American. She fought for Spencer to have the best treatment possible when he came into the ER after being shot. She worked her ass off and was a true patient advocate. That’s what being a Nurse is all about, fighting for the rights of your patients when they’re being mistreated.
OTP of the Week
Lyra: Amy and Jake from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. That scene where they were discussing having a kid was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen and so damn adult. These two are the epitome of OTP’s and I can’t wait to see how they face the challenges of having a kid!
Lizzie: What Lyra said. Everything Lyra said.
Jasmine: This one goes to Tessa Young and Hardin Scott from After We Collided. I know the movie isn’t out yet but that clip posted by the After movie account this week gave me life!
Jessica: Casey and Brett, Chicago Fire. I’ve been on the fence about these two for awhile, but after this episode I’m rooting for them. They’re cute together, and they both deserve happiness.
Moment that made you collapse into a puddle of FEELS
Lizzie: The ending of this week’s Chicago PD was brutal. Somehow I’d convinced myself they were going to make this storyline about balance, and not about pain, again. And yet the performances from the entire cast, but especially Marina Squerciati there, at the end …it was hard not to feel for that. Even if I think the whole thing is BS.
McKenzie: Miss Americana . All of it. Taylor Swift left me on the floor this week in a puddle of tears. I didn’t know what to expect but I got a lot of insight into her life. I was a casual Taylor fan, I love her music. I can now proudly say I’m a Swifty.
Jessica: The scene where Spencer’s family, friends, and teammates show up to see him wheeled off to surgery on All American. This whole episode was rough, but this scene really got to me. It was amazing to see everyone came together to support one of their own.
Gillian: Seeing Billie Lourd on Will & Grace as a way to honor her grandmother, Debbie Reynolds’, character, really got to me even though it wasn’t the focus. Anything Billie does in tribute to her mom and grandma just destroys me.
Jasmine: I’m with Jessica on this one. All American got me too when everyone was lined up as Spencer was being taken to surgery.
Quote of the Week
Gillian: “I was a woman ruling a patriarchy; my brand had to be overkill.” -Margo, The Magicians
Lizzie: “That’s what immigrants do, they take the hand that’s offered, then reach back and extend their own. And they know there’s no shame in it.” – Party of Five
Jasmine: “Hardin, you have two options here. Either you fuck me, or you leave. You decide. ” – Tessa, After We Collided teaser clip.
WTF Moment of the Week
Lizzie: Shakira and J-Lo killed it. The reaction to their performance from some suddenly prudish idiots? Now that’s WTF. It’s all good when Adam Levine prances around half naked, but when two women over 40 want to assert their sexuality and celebrate their culture then that’s a problem? Fuck that.
Emily: I love fantasy books; so much so that Goodreads almost exclusively recommends them to me. I finally finished Gork The Teenage Dragon this week, and it was so bad. It has an average rating of about 3 stars, so I thought it would be tolerable, at least. I just feel wronged by Goodreads.
Jasmine: The scene in All American when Spencer and Olivia were in the ER. The way the doctor was being so nonchalant about Spencer being shot and even asking to run a toxicology screening to make sure he wasn’t on something. The police questioning Olivia and accusing Spencer of being in a gang and then suspecting a drug deal gone bad when Olivia told the nurse she couldn’t take Narcotics because she was a recovering addict. I was livid the entire time I watched that scene. Seriously WTF??????
