Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows & movies that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.
So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:
Badass Female Character of the Week
Lyra: The women of Motherland: Fort Salem are my badass female characters of the week. Abigail knows what she wants and is going for it with a passion. Tally is here for the community and honor of being at Salem and is here to train her ass off. And Raelle has a fire burning within her that can bring this whole establishment down. Together they are some of the most interesting and powerful witches we’ve seen so far on Motherland: Fort Salem and we can’t wait for more!
Ashley: Trudy Judy had me cracking up on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I love watching her sass her way through everything. Sass = badass in my book. “14 butts,” indeed.
Gillian: Claire Fraser on Outlander! I just love how dedicated she is to the medical profession. I really loved how they showed why she was so adamant in her mission to create penicillin in this timeline, way ahead of schedule. She cares so deeply for her patients and I think it’s great how she refuses to back down from anyone who gets in her way.
Jasmine: Going with Dolores in Westworld. It’s only the first episode of season 3 and Dolores is already kicking ass. I have no idea what her master plan is just yet but, I’m sticking around for the ride!
Lariel: I know the category is “character” but I need to give a shout to actress Isa Briones of Star Trek: Picard. She’s playing multiple characters at the same time, and I’m just loving it.
OTP of the Week
Lizzie: Zoey and Max on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. I was lukewarm on the show and on any of the ship possibilities for five episodes, and then …and then Max sang “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” and I was DONE FOR. I don’t even know how you could watch that scene and not ship it? It was absolutely everything we want out of an OTP and this journey is just getting started.
Jade: I blame Lizzie for this, but I am absolutely obsessed by Zoey and Max on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist right now. I thought they were cute but was mostly ambivalent about them until THAT SONG. If you are practicing self-isolation and want a new OTP to obsess over, check this one out. You won’t regret it. (The chemistry in his simple “always” damn near gave me a heart attack and now has me writing fanfic for these two idiots.) LIZZIE, WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME???
Emily: Cristine & Ben of SimplyNailogical. They had a really good podcast this week about social distancing and it’s import. They’re just such a great couple that supports the heck out of each other, and I love it.
Moment that made you collapse into a puddle of FEELS
Jasmine: Liz breaking down in the shower thinking about Max being dead in Roswell, New Mexico. That tore me up. Through a majority of the episode she was maintaining her composure so when she just broke down and let her grief flow, I felt that.
Gillian: I am a sucker for “What If?” episodes, so this week’s This is Us was like catnip for me. What was interesting though was the focus Randall put into each scenario. It wasn’t a typical what if scenario. He was almost always thinking about Rebecca’s current situation, and it was such a breakthrough for his character to figure out why. I know this show is somewhat of emotional porn, but the way all the characters have grown from episode 1 is really great.
Lizzie: I know I’m just repeating myself, but I DO NOT CARE. The end of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, where Max is singing the encore to “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” all soft and sweet as he looks at Zoey’s window …my heart. MY HEART.
Jade: Lizzie…stop…oh my god…now I…I have to go watch that scene again, and I’ve already watched it a number of times that is frankly embarrassing. (More than 30, probably still less than 100? Maybe?) “And when I’m dreamin’, well, I know I’m gonna dream, I’m gonna dream about the time that I’m with you…” Oh god…it still gets to me. I think I need to lie down. I honestly don’t know how you could watch that last minute of this episode and not be willing to die for this ship. I don’t know how I’m going to make it to the next episode on Sunday night. LIZZIE, LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID!!! YOU TOOK A PERFECTLY GOOD FANDOM WRITER AND GAVE HER ANXIETY!!!!
Ashley: I loved watching Raffi tell Jean-Luc that she loves him. And then Jean-Luc, a man who has always had difficulty with displays of emotion, tells her that he loves her too. I love that I can get all the warm fuzzies watching Star Trek: Picard.
Lariel: Shaun’s breakdown with Lea in The Good Doctor. It is so hard for a person with autism to express emotions. Often Shaun comes off as a complete jerk when he does, and this time was no exception. But I also understand the emotional mechanism behind the terrible behavior, so for me it was heartbreaking.
Quote of the Week
Gillian: “Shut up! You’re doing the whole ‘Kokomo’ package?!” -Nate, Legends of Tomorrow
Lizzie: “When I come home (when I come home) well I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow-old (when I grow-old) well I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s growing old with you.” – Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist
Jade: I see Lizzie’s beginning of the song and raise her the slowed down/tiny smile encore: “When I come home, yeah I know I’m gonna be, I’m gonna be the man who’s comin’ home to you. And when I’m dreamin’, well I know I’m gonna dream, I’m gonna dream about the time that I’m with you. But I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more. Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.” – Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist
Ashley: “Do not treat me like a dying man or you will run the risk of pissing me off.” – Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: Picard
Jasmine: “I wonder if my life will ever be normal again.” – Kyle Roswell, New Mexico
WTF Moment of the Week
Lariel: Every line in Legends of Tomorrow that tried to justify the departure of Ray & Nora. It felt like the writers begging for forgiveness for a move that was very unpopular with the Legends fandom. At least they had the sense to make it a happy ending.
Lizzie: Can I just say every second Trump has been in public this week?
Ashley: Sutra letting Narek loose got me all kinds of mad on Star Trek: Picard. Can’t wait to see the finale next week!
Jasmine: Lizzie, I second that. Every time he’s on TV, I think WTF?
