Performances of the Week: May 17th to May 23rd

Welcome to another Sunday of talking about the shows & movies that made us laugh, cry, go awww and, of course, look around and wonder what in the world was happening. If it made us feel things, whether they were good, or bad, then this is where we talk about it. This is where you tell us if you agree. This is where we let it all out.

This time around we’re doing things a little different. We’re going for the performances of the week that blew us away, left us wanting more still are on our brains days later!

So, without further ado, here are these week’s picks:

Erin: I didn’t think that I would like Sweet Magnolias as much as I do. The entire cast is phenomenal. Jamie Lynn Spears, JoAnna Garcia, Heather Headley, and Brooke Elliott kept you captivated. They were a mix of strength and vulnerability which drew you into the series and kept you binging the show. These women pull you along as their characters go through everything that you can imagine and at the end of the day, you look forward to watching their character arcs unfold. They gave powerful performances that make you remember the power of friendship and truth.

Lizzie: Brec Bassinger killed it as Courtney in the premiere of Stargirl. Yes, the show is good, and yes, the writing is on her side and the tone of the show benefits her, but she still had to bring it if we were ever going to not just believe in Courtney as a hero, but get invested in basically a new era of…well, superheroes. And if we do, if we want more JSA, if we’re super excited for a new team, if we are looking forward to Monday, well …that’s just because Brec made us invest.

Lyra: Tally, Abigail, and Raelle from Motherland: Fort Salem. Tally questioned her commanding officers leadership, learned that forgiveness can come from unexpected places, and sacrificed herself for the greater good of witchkind. Abigail met up with Tally and Raelle and didn’t let them go through this battle all alone. Her sacrifice and willingness to stay with Raelle speaks volumes about the kind of woman she is. And Raelle, she gave up her protection to secure the life of someone she had just met. Her kindness and her love for Abigail, her teammate and sister, is what led them to the witchbomb they created between them. And dear lord, I can’t wait to see more of Motherland: Fort Salem and these three young women when this show returns for season 2!

Gillian: I mean, we all agree Sarah Paulson is one of the greatest living actors, correct? But this week’s Mrs. America was her brilliance on display. I usually have a hard time watching the episodes that focus on the anti-ERA women, but wow. Everything her character, Alice Macray, did from trying to push their movement forward at the convention to getting flustered and then being shoved aside by the other members to getting high and everything she experiences. She so easily jumps from dramatic moments to comedic ones. Also, she starts to realize that Phyllis isn’t totally on her side, which is great because Phyllis is an awful human being! In conclusion, Sarah Paulson: all the awards please.

Jessica: The season finale of SWAT was amazing, especially the scenes with Chris and Street.  Lina Esco and Alex Russell completely crushed every scene from being shot at to their emotional talk at the end.  Chris and Street have both grown so much in the last three years, and this episode showed how much they care for each other.  And as much as I love them as best friends, I need for them to finally be together in season four!
