It’s a brand new world in The Bachelorette 16×05, with a new Bachelorette, new guys and a whole other vibe. Now, that’s all likely to last for one episode, because we’re now on an even tighter schedule and guys have to get eliminated, which means drama drama drama! But that’s what we signed up for, isn’t it?
So here at Fangirlish, we’re breaking down this week’s episode, which was about as awkward as they come. Joining me on this roundtable are Fangirlish writers Erin, Lyra Jessica and Grace.
Here we go!
New Bachelorette, new season! Or is it? Does it feel like a fresh start to you or will the ghost of Clare and Dale continue to hang over the season? What are your expectations for the new Bachelorette, and is it fair to ask Tayshia to save the season?
Lizzie: Absolutely. It feels like a brand new world. I’ve already forgotten about Clare and Dale. New phone who dis? And Tayshia seems genuinely excited, so that makes me feel like I want her to do well and find a real connection. Plus she’s only the second Black Bachelorette! All good things in my book.
As for saving the season …all she has to do is try? And, you know, the drama will unfold, as it always does. Just …more interesting drama than what we’ve seen so far.
Erin: Queue happy dance. Clare is gone. What did the munchkins sing? Ding Dong the wicked witch is dead. Only instead of dead she’s just gone from the season and that’s good enough for me. I really feel like with Tayshia it is a whole new season. And I love it. But there is just one thing – please make Blake go so it is a whole new season and I don’t have Clare whining PTSD.
Lyra: Honestly, it didn’t feel like a fresh start until they brought the new guys in. I don’t know why but it was the last step in resetting this season and giving Tayshia the best chance at finding her future husband. As for Clare, I skipped forward anytime she was mentioned or when they did the special for her. Couldn’t care less about her or what she’s up to.
Jessica: I do feel like it’s a new season. Tayshia is open to getting to know the guys that are left, and all but one stayed after meeting her. I already think Tayshia has rescued the season just by showing up and being excited about getting to know everyone. And the guys are excited that she’s there.
Grace: It feels like a fresh start to me and I’m loving it. There are still some mentions of Dale and Clare, but I imagine that’ll go away as the season progresses. Honestly, I just want to forget that the first couple of episodes ever happened. Tayshia should’ve always been the Bachelorette and I’m just going to pretend that she was.
What are your feelings on Tayshia? How about in comparison to Clare?
Lizzie: I know nothing about her, so without any preconceived notions, I really like her. She seems warm and fun and personable and she seems to actually believe in this whole crazy idea that you can go on this journey and find something worthwhile, which I guess is something you need if you’re going to ….you know, be the lead.
Erin: I don’t know her, but I hated Clare and Tayshia puts a smile on my face so I will take it. She’s a breath of fresh air and seems genuine.
Lyra: Tayshia and her smile could light up a whole fucking country. Do you see that thing? Just…stunning. She’s artwork of the finest caliber and she’s made a fan out of me! It’s almost not fair to compare her to Clare. Clare, who?
Jessica: I like her so far. Obviously, she’s gorgeous, but she seems more stable than Clare. I’m interested to see who she connects with in the next few episodes.
Grace: She can actually hold a meaningful conversation unlike Claire! But seriously, she just has a much better vibe then Claire ever had. Claire was always about ‘me, me, me!’ whereas Tayshia seems to want to actually get to know these guys and invest in equal time with each. I stan!
New Bachelorette means some new guys. We already discussed the ones on Clare’s season, so let’s talk about the new ones. Any standouts?
Lizzie: Allow me to now answer the question before I ask this: Where were they keeping these guys? Were they randomly quarantined as second alternates? Is that …something that always happens? What do the guys get if …they don’t make it into the show? Because they’re still putting their lives on pause for …what exactly?
As for the guys …well, Spencer be hot, and Montel owns a gym, so you know he ripped …but …eh …I don’t feel like any of them stood out.
Erin: I couldn’t get over the fact that I didn’t know if they were quarantined and I wondered if they had covid and so I didn’t pay any attention to them. Just kept having that question go in my mind.
Lyra: I can’t with Spencer. He’s hot, no doubt about that, but he’s so cookie cutter that it hurts. Yes, their children would rule this world with their beauty, but I’m not here for it. There’s something fishy about him and his face and I don’t like it! Also, that guy with the pornstache. No, just no. Burn it with fire!
Jessica: I feel like the only one that got a lot of screen time was Spencer. And I’m not a fan of his. At all. Maybe he just got a bad edit, but I got a really bad feeling about him during the episode. He seems sleazy.
Grace: I don’t understand why everyone is hating on Spencer. He really hasn’t done anything wrong. I feel as though Claire’s guys have some sort of entitlement and that pisses me off. You don’t have any more of a right to Tayshia than these other guys. Sure, you had to deal with Claire and all that drama, but that doesn’t make you any better or worse than these other guys.
I know it’s early, but it’s not like Tayshia has that much time, so I gotta ask: Who’s your odds-on-favorite to win Tayshia’s heart at this point?
Lizzie: I guess the easy answer is Brendan, but this is The Bachelorette, so who knows? Anything can happen. It’s not like they usually stick with the guy who made a good first impression.
Erin: Zac. But she’ll go with Brendan.
Lyra: Definitely Brendan. Who has fireworks on the first date unless there’s something magical brewing between them?
Jessica: I’m honestly not sure. Maybe Ivan? I felt like they had a good connection, and he’s very attractive. Or maybe Zac or Brendan. It’s too early to tell, but I really, really, really don’t want her to pick Spencer.
Grace: Obviously she’s leaning Brendan at this point, but she’s only had one one-on-one. So while Brendan is the standout right now, that could easily change as the season goes on and she starts to spend more quality time with the other guys.
We checked in with Clare and Dale this episode, and from social media it seems the two are still going strong. Have your feelings for them changed now that they’re out of the show? Are you rooting for them to make it?
Lizzie: I literally root for all of these couples to make it, because I don’t like to root against people’s happiness, but statistically speaking, few of them will, and if Clare and Dale follow that trend, I can’t say I’ll shed any tears for them.
Erin: I hope they are happy, but I still don’t like them and the mere mention of Clares name gives me anxiety.
Lyra: I saw the Clare and Dale moments and skipped right over them!
Jessica: I saw a few of Clare’s stories on Instagram when she visited Dale’s home. They do seem really happy, and they are cute together. I hope they make it.
Grace: Listen, I think these two deserve happiness 100% but it just screams so fake to me. I feel like every time Clare talks about the relationship, she’s trying to convince us that it’s real. And whenever Dale tries to get in a word of how he feels, Clare cuts him off. I just think Dale got in a little over his head and now is convincing himself that this is what he wants. Granted, I obviously don’t know these people personally so it’s all speculation. But I’ve seen a lot of The Bachelorette and this couple just ain’t it.
