2020 was not the best year. Not even close. But one bright spot is that there were so many amazing female characters on TV this year. So many that it was hard to narrow down this list, but we did finally manage to pick out some of our favorites female characters who kicked ass in 2020. And we have to admit, it’s a pretty great list of women.
Stella Kidd – Chicago Fire
Stella Kidd has always been one of our favorite characters on Chicago Fire, but she’s really become a leader the past year. She developed Girls on Fire which is an amazing opportunity to help young women get the knowledge and experience to become firefighters. And when it was almost shut down, she fought to get the program back. She also fiercely protects and fights for the ones she loves, like Severide, who has become a much better person in the last few years (and we definitely think that’s because of Stella!)
Kim Burgess – Chicago PD
Burgess has had a rough year (like the rest of us). She survived a miscarriage early in the year and is back taking down the bad guys in Chicago. She’s been the voice of reason this last year with Ruzek and Atwater, and she never backs down when she knows someone is in danger. We wish she would figure out her on-again-off-again relationship with Ruzek, but we’ll always love Burgess.
Emily Lopez – All Rise
Emily was one of our favorite new characters this year. She’s a kick-ass lawyer who stands up for her clients and is finally learning how to stand up for herself. She scene where she loses it from being overworked and just exhausted was amazing. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Emily, and we hope it involves getting back together with Luke.
Nic Nevin – The Resident
We love a woman who excels in her career and her personal life. Let’s be honest: Nic runs Chastain. She keeps Conrad and the other doctors in line which isn’t an easy task. She’s tough when she needs to be, but she’s also kind. And her relationship with Conrad is one of our favorites. We’re excited for their wedding!
Penelope Alvarez – One Day at a Time
We’re still gutted that One Day at a Time isn’t coming back, but we still love this show. Penelope was so many things to so many people: a veteran, a nurse practitioner, and a mom. She was strong and fierce, honest and open and vulnerable, and fun! We’ll miss her next year.
Abigail Bellweather – Motherland: Fort Salem
She’s a witch and a member of the U.S. Army. Do we need to say more? Abigail can take down anything, or any one, that comes her way. I wouldn’t dare mess with her.
The Women of 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star
We love all the women of 9-1-1 and couldn’t choose just one. Maddie, Athena, and Hen are all kick-ass characters in their own way. All three have risked their lives to protect and save the citizens of Los Angeles. This season was tough for them as they all had personal tragedies but have survived and are stronger than ever. We’re excited for this season (especially for Maddie and Chim’s baby!) We also were introduced to Grace and Marjan, and it didn’t take long for us to love them, too!
Kensi Blye – NCIS: Los Angeles
It’s hard to believe that we’ve had Special Agent Kensi Blye on our screens for more than 11 years. She’s definitely one of our favorite agents on TV, and she’s one of the reasons why NCIS: Los Angeles has lasted so long. The guys are great, but Kensi is special. She’s had a pretty amazing career, and she’s finally married to Deeks. We’re excited to see their future (maybe a baby?) and how this whole owning a bar situation works out.
Carol Peletier – The Walking Dead
Carol’s survived this long on The Walking Dead and that alone is something to celebrate. Even when she’s suffering and not at her best, she’ll show up and save the day. Despite all of her losses, she’s still thriving. We can’t wait to see what happens in the last season of The Walking Dead (and we’re hoping for a lot of Caryl scenes).
Olivia Benson – Law and Order: SVU
We couldn’t make a list of kick-ass characters without mentioning Olivia Benson! We really can’t remember a time when she wasn’t on TV, and she’s still one of the best police officers on our screens. When SVU started she was this young female detective, and now she’s running the department. She always protects the victims and does whatever she can to get justice, and 2020 was no exception.
Other Female Characters We Loved in 2020:
Annie/Starlight, Kimiki/The Female, and Maggie/Queen Maeve – The Boys; Maggie Bell – FBI; Michonne – The Walking Dead; Harley Quinn – Harley Quinn: The Animated Series; Olivia Baker – All American; Lola Carmichael – All Rise.
