Hello Grown-ish fans! Welcome back. This week’s story was mainly Ana driven, Zoey was nowhere to be found (I guess she is back in Miami filming another video) but that’s okay, because it opened up the opportunity for other cast members to shine. I honestly forgot Ana was dating anyone, although Javi looks like he’s a grad student, he’s an alright dude, I thought he was cute driving his old el Camino and rocking a 50’s era type swagger.
One thing that came to light however, was he is celibate and Ana is not. I know, right? There was a lot to dissect in this relationship and in this weeks episode of Grown-ish so lets get right to it.
Lets Wait Awhile
Ana is crazy about Javi and he is crazy about her. Javi wants more than just Ana’s body, and that is a HUGE change for her. The truth is, Javi is celibate and he’s made a vow to God to abstain from sex. However, in this relationship Ana is the one having the issue about waiting to have sex, she totally wants to bone Javi and nearly does until he stops her before it got too heated. I liked seeing this interaction on screen, because it was a gender reversal and it played it out nicely. Usually on television its the guy who gets frustrated with the girl for not wanting to “go all the way” but this time it was was the girl who eventually started to question her own beliefs in a real and totally believable way.
We all know when Ana was a freshman she was a devout Catholic, Republican. Throughout her time at Cal-U, Ana as expanded her beliefs, her friend circles and her major. This time, she is expanding her belief in religion and what church and God really mean to her. Javi brings her to his church which is nothing she is used to, but she loved it and actually got on board with his celibacy lifestyle. Jazz and Sky were there to lend her support and it was lovely to have Sky give advice without being so damn snarky or sarcastic. Ana realized that sex is only part of a relationship and if she wanted her and Javi to last, then she’d need to explore all the parts.
Props to the Grown-ish writers for exploring this storyline, I’m curious to see how Ana and Javi end up living this new lifestyle.
Street Talking
Dear Aaron, while I like that you stand up for your beliefs and you actually care about Black Student Union meetings, did you really need to get arrested by the campus police for putting up flyers? Look I’ll admit this would totally happen, I just think if the Grown-ish writers were trying to talk about black men being disproportionately arrested by police officers that Aaron’s storyline would have had more substance. I mean black men can’t even drive, but yet Aaron’s storyline has him at college being arrested for putting up flyers? It just seemed really thrown together to me, in order to talk about a larger subject. I felt the story about Cal-U using tuition money to fund private jails was rushed, and like the writers were like we gotta put this in there too, man! No you didn’t writers, you could have talked about a real and serious subject on a deeper level but you chose not to.
Meanwhile, in tonight’s b-storyline, Jazz and Sky take Jocelyn to meet their dad and have some home cooked food at his food truck. I keep forgetting that Jocelyn is a transfer from Spellman College in Atlanta, so thanks writers for having her mention how much she misses it there.
While visiting Compton, Jocelyn has a stellar idea about a class project she’s been having trouble with. Jazz and Sky are like the Venus and Serena of track and field, so why not make a documentary about them? I loved the idea. Jazz and Sky loved the idea and I’m hopeful the season finale ends with Jocelyn showing the film to everyone and Jazz and Sky heading to the Olympic trials. Fingers crossed.
