Have we already told you how much we love virtual panels? Well… we love them! As every year, Paleyfest offers us news of our favorite shows in its virtual talks with the entire cast and crew. It is the time to analyze everything that the cast and crew of The Good Doctor discussed. Anxious?
Here we go!
The entire cast but especially Hill Harper AKA Dr. Marcus Andrews emphasized how important diversity representation and visibility, is and that The Good Doctor gives to POC a lot of visibility. As he explained, even if the racial issues of our society or the emphasis is that a character is POC are not addressed all the time in the show, they are there and that matters.
Maybe that’s what it is about, POC are not simply there to show that they are POC but to have their plots be as varied as those of any other character who is not a POC. The important thing is that POC see themselves represented, see people like them when they turn on the TV and watch The Good Doctor. It shows that they matter.
As the cast and executive producers recalled, they felt they had to address the pandemic in the new episodes. The world changed because of it and doctors are on the front line suffered and still continue to suffer the most bitter and horrible fates of this pandemic. So they just had to deal with this reality in the new The Good Doctor season, it wouldn’t have felt right if they hadn’t.
Also now, for everyone, but especially for Freddie Highmore, putting themselves in the shoes of a doctor is a different experience for them. They feel more of the responsibility that this job entails, they value even more what doctors do every day, especially at times like these when a pandemic hits the world.
The cast and crew also revealed what the pandemic taught them. Because, if COVID has had something, it has made us rethink many things, rearrange our priorities and be more aware than ever that this life is too short. And each and every one of us can identify with these words.
Both Freddie Highmore and Paige Spara believe that it is a challenge for Shaun and Lea to have a baby and they were both very happy when they first read the script. They were looking forward to playing something like this because both they and the executive producers feel that each season deals with an emotional challenge for Shaun and they were clear that this season they had to put him in a serious relationship, a long-term relationship with a future and a baby felt right.
They love to challenge the characters to give more of themselves and, at the same time, show an everyday situation such as the fear of not being a good father or a good mother. We can hope the baby will bond Shea even more.
In addition, Paige Spara loves being able to tell Lea’s story by being an example both personally and professionally. It is a challenge that she gladly accepts because she loves to tell stories of strong and brave women who can do anything, even if they think they are not ready for it. The episode where Lea was the center and saved the day, which is the episode directed by Freddie Highmore, will always hold a special place in her heart, just like this story of the baby.
The women of the cast and crew were really happy to have female friends on the show that don’t depend on a man or have one in the middle. As they comment, this is something too rare in a show, since female friendships always depend or begin with a man or inevitably end with one. But this is not the case in The Good Doctor and they love to explore this, in addition to Claire’s difficult position to balance her friendship and her professional relationship with Dr. Lim.
The show is full of family dynamics between different characters that are not always a family and the cast and crew are really involved in growing these relationships because they give them the possibility to see their characters grow emotionally.
Directing … is a good experience
As we have mentioned, Freddie Highmore directed episode 10 of this season of The Good Doctor and it was a wonderful experience for him but it was also a wonderful experience for the rest of the cast. They only have praise for Freddie and they really liked that he gave the orders behind the scenes. Will he direct another episode?
Bonus: HILL HARPER’S SON IS SUPER CUTE AND WE LOVE HIM!
