I know my brand when it comes to Manifest and I am pretty sure that you do too. I really don’t have many nice things to say about the show. Like next to none. But then I am sure that leaves you asking why I watch it? Well, it’s because the first season, I liked it. And I wasn’t willing to give up on it.
But the second season, no. And the premiere episode of the third. No. However, when we’re talking about last nights episode, be ready to be shocked with me.
I liked 85% of it.
Why? Because it brought me back to what this show was about at first for me. Family. Family finding each other, family getting through, family protecting each other. It brought back the human element, until it didn’t.
The strongest part of Manifest has always been the Stone Family. Their love for each other and their devotion to each other has always been important. And in the seasons that proceeded this one, I felt there was character growth and then a character stall. There was so much that could have been done, but it became too much about the mystery and not about the overall center of the story. The Stones, Saanvi, and even Zeke.
It was about getting to know the passengers of 828.
And for once it felt like I wasn’t getting an hour at covert church, but rather an hour where it wasn’t tossed in my throat but was interested in the actual story.
And how it all comes together.
BEN CAN’T LET IT GO
Here’s the thing about Ben… sometimes him not listening makes sense, but most of the time it doesn’t. He obviously thinks that he can ignore Vance, disregarding the fact that he’s in this position because partially of Ben. Vance said to stand down, and Ben should have listened.
But listening isn’t his strong point. Ben keeps telling Grace that he needs to save Vance or at least try. But I think that Ben is missing that Vance is a smart man who obviously has a plan and I think that Ben should have given him the time. But Ben doesn’t give anyone time.
He doesn’t think that he’s going to ever get caught, that he’s one step ahead. But he’s not. He’s a math professor and being on 828 did not a super spy make. And he should have realized that especially when the NSA, DOD, and Pentagon show up at his door.
But he doesn’t. He’s still determined to have his head focused on 828 and its mysteries versus his family. And what do I mean by that?
As we all know, the three meth men survived drowning in the lake. They were gone for 84 days. 84 days and then they are back. When Mic examines footage from the park rangers and sees them she immediately calls Ben and tells him.
And of course Ben and Grace are scared. These men kidnapped their son. And in their head that means that they just have to keep Cal away for 84 days. But the thing is that Ben, again, doesn’t see that he doesn’t have control over everything.
But they decide that the best thing is for them to go hide with Graces brother? Say what? Grace has a brother? Who knew.
ANGELINA IS A MISSING PIECE
I think that I like this girl, because she fits pieces together. She makes sense of things that have made no sense. And the thing is that is what we have needed.
We have needed connections.
She’s had a calling and doesn’t know what it is. But Olive explains it to her and walks her through it. She explains that she keeps having the calling because she hasn’t solved it yet. And though it doesn’t makes sense to Angelina, she’s new to having someone around to help her through it.
And Olive is that person. Which I am for because I think that Olive has been under utilized. And helping Angelina find her way back to her school and walking through the moments so they can figure out what they are supposed to do – you see a confidence in Olive.
Though they don’t know what the calling is – but they follow it through getting a slushy (cause yes, a picture led them to get a slushy) it’s an important moment for both their growth.
When they accidentally loose the picture that led them to the slushy, things are finally going to come together. A little.
THE THREE METH MEN
We know they are back. And it’s kind of scary that they are. Michaela knows that she wants to find them, because she needs to save Cal. She needs to protect her family and I really think that it’s important for her to do good police work and keep her job. It gives her a connection to normalcy.
When they come back, they have no idea what is going on. But they straight go crazy and they attack a couple and tie them up to steal their RV. Michaela and her partner find them and are able to find the RV.
But of course there is a diversion and one dude throws a propane tank at them while they are driving and it explodes in front of them.
Two of the meth men are convinced they came back to do good. One is not and is legit pure evil. He patronizes them into thinking that he is listening. But he’s not. However, them talking about the past leads them back to where they were as kids.
And it just so happens that it’s the same place that Angelina and Olive got slushys. As they are planning to rob the place, they hear the cops. They also hear Cal in their heads saying GO TO HER.
One thinks it is mind control. One sees the picture that fell on the ground from Angelina and thinks that he’s meant to go to her. He doesn’t run at all, the picture has changed something in him.
And so he doesn’t run. And gets arrested.
MICHAELA PLAYS BY THE RULES
The thing that I have learned with this show is that everything happens for a reason. And so the picture being lost – that brings Angelina and Olive back to the slushy stand where they run into Michaela.
She tries to tell Angelina and Olive to go home. Angelina sees the picture and she wants to keep it, but Michaela knows that she has to follow the rules cause she can loose her job. And you see a struggle in her – but she knows that she needs to follow the rules or loose her job.
Olive doesn’t get it through. She’s used to 828 coming first. But that’s the thing – 828 can’t come first always for the characters to move forward. There has to be more sides to them and I love that for the time we are seeing that.
Because to me, it shows that there are bigger stakes and for a long time I haven’t felt the stakes. Sorry. I mean sure, I know there were stakes last season with Zeke, but I have always felt that relationship with Michaela felt forced and didn’t make much sense.
I needed to be invested in characters again and for the first time in a long time, I felt like I remembered the characters and liked them.
Michaela doesn’t give the picture back, she says she has to take it in. And in the long run that works out because she is allowed to give the picture back.
APART AGAIN CAUSE OF BEN
Look, Grace may not always be my favorite character, but I do like her in this episode. But I am left with more questions about her than ever.
She decides to go hide at her brothers and like where has this man been? Finding out that they didn’t speak for 10 years is hard for me to understand why she’s there. Where was he when 828 went down? Why didn’t she reach out.
Seeing Cal bring them together is an important thing. Because Grace needs her brother. And she especially needs him.
Because Ben – well Ben of course rats out to the NSA about the tail-fin and Vance and it makes the news and now the 828er’s are the center of the world again and everyone has more questions.
I guess everyone is gonna be about their resurrection now, which honestly, I still can’t deal with.
But what it means is that the Stones can’t be together… again.
- If it’s a shock to anyone that Zeke has some sort of something after surviving his death date, you haven’t been paying attention
- Anyone else shocked that the captain went out on a limb to save Michaela’s job?
- Saanvi needs to admit what she did or it will eat her apart. It is obviously taking its toll on her.
- I want to know more about the backstory of all these people. Because I feel like it has to have something to do with why they are the way they are. It just doesn’t make any sense if it doesn’t.
- What did Grace turn her back on her brother for? I need to know.
- The fact that the 3 Meth Men of the apocalypse knew Angelina really makes me think more about backstories. Are they finally gonna get there so something makes sense?
- Am I the only one that thinks Vance is gonna be pissed?
- Am I the only one that thinks that Vance won’t be coming home anytime soon?
- Michaela seeing that the Major is missing – that’s major. I think she’s gonna figure out it’s Saanvi and for that whole storyline to unravel – I think is important. Not one is seeing that there is something wrong with her and yet they all still expect stuff from her.
- The Stone family being separated again… people should have listened to Grace.
- Bens hand lighting up and the tail of the plane having his hand print lighting up – I have a feeling that’s leading to something and that just means karma and he shoulda listened to Vance.
