“Will They Pass or Fail?” was an apt name for Spy x Family 1×05. Last week, I was wondering if Loid and Yor would have to do some shady dealings to get Anya to school. If last week was the most tension on Spy x Family, then this week was the absolute opposite. Not sure if this anime will give us a typical beach episode, but this episode exuded just as much comfort.
Trying to avoid the manga as much as possible gets easier each week. Now that we’re five episodes into the series, it’s become routine to get excited for the latest Spy x Family adventure. In the past week, anime fans have debated about the series, but no one can debate how wholesome it is. Spy x Family 1×05 gave us “wholesome” on a whole new level this week.
AT THE TOP OF THE WAITLIST

Today’s the day the Forgers discover if Anya was able to get into Eden College or not. Twilight’s mission depends on it, but after the events of last episode, there’s no way to tell if he will be successful. WISE, the spy agency Twilight works for has full faith in him. He’s the best spy they’ve got, why wouldn’t he pass this part of the mission? But the Forgers have passed every omen and Anya’s convinced she won’t pass because she stepped in poop. That’s not very elegant at all.
Although, their luck hasn’t necessarily run out. Housemaster Henderson has informed them that Anya placed at the top of the waitlist. If just one student drops out, she’s in! Does Yor have to kill someone just to get Anya into the school or can the Forgers wait for a simple phone call? Despite Yor’s fantasies, they only have to wait three days for the fateful call. She’s in! Now, it’s time to celebrate.
Yet again, the best part of this episode was seeing the Forger’s collective brain cell in action. Not that they need to use their skills to get out of a tricky situation, but the entire scene where they see the omens was hilarious. It hasn’t taken the series long to show that the Forgers are a cohesive unit. Loid, Yor and Anya even catastrophize in the same way. If they keep up this level of humor, Spy x Family might beat HoriMiya as my comfort anime.
ANYTHING FOR AGENT TWILIGHT AND MISS ANYA

Franky, Twilight’s informant, heard the news of Anya getting into Eden seconds after the Forgers did. He’a already bought wine, ordered delivery and after a few sips of booze, is ready to convince Loid that Anya deserves whatever she wants for passing. Loid already knows Anya has high ambitions, but he wasn’t prepared for what she was thinking about this time.
Franky discovers that Anya’s favorite show, Spy Wars, has an amusement park dedicated to the show and it’s free to rent. Why wouldn’t Loid give Anya all that she’s asking for? Well, Loid would not only have to pull some strings to get her there, but also embarrass himself for her sake. As we know from Spy x Family 1×01, Loid hates it when children cry, especially Anya. So he calls in all the shots.
Loid underestimates how much power he has at the spy agency. When he tells headquarters he needs this castle and extra spies for Operation Strix, they provide everything he needs. Spy x Family is great at tearing down Agent Twilight’s walls and at making that his spy background is the butt of the joke. The agency’s willing to do provide Twilight what asks for. The spies that join Anya’s party are Twilight’s fanboys and do all they can to please him. There’s no way we’re going to take the WISE spy agency seriously now.
LOIDMAN SAVES PRINCESS ANYA

Loid’s always had a similar resemblance to Anya’s favorite Spy Wars character Bondman and she’s about to make her dreams a reality. As the hero of her spy fantasy, Loid has to save “Princess Anya” from the clutches of Count Scruffy Head aka Franky. They have him answer a quiz Anya put together, survive the wrath of several spies throwing colorful balls at him, and defeat Yorticia the Witch.
The one thing that got me about Loid’s “mission” was the fact that he didn’t question why Yor can fight. According to him, she’s just a city worker and his fake wife. The only thing he does question is why she’s using physical attacks as opposed to “magic” to play Yorticia. Does this not raise red flags for anyone? Anya’s never going to reveal Yor’s secret, but it’s already too obvious that Yor has another side to her. Why hasn’t Loid reached a conclusion that she might be a double agent or something?
I haven’t read the Spy x Family manga so I’m not sure if Yor is more than just an assassin, but Loid could come to that conclusion eventually. He must be distracted since his mission is going well so far. Hopefully Anya can continue the mission and make sure she doesn’t make any enemies. I know that little boy in the preview is definitely going to cause her some trouble.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
- I didn’t care about Franky as a character all that much before, but now I love him too
- The WISE spy agency needs to get their s*** together! How are you great spies if you heed the call of a six year old??
- Anya’s deadpan “save me” had me laughing every time.
- Note to Self: Keep alcohol away from Yor Forger. She may hurt you and/or herself
- Anya is always the ultimate troublemaker, I really can’t wait to see how she pulls the strings next episode
- Yes, I recognize Anya’s mischief face from the manga bits I saw, but I will still wait for the anime!
