If there’s one thing that Spy x Family is good at, it’s the push and pull of tension. After leaving us on that insane cliffhanger last week, we’re back to find out how Loid and Yor will prove their love to Yuri. To recap, episode 1×06 left us with Yuri’s crazy command for Yor and Loid to kiss in order to prove that they are in love with each other. This episode finally revealed a scene from a manga panel I could not avoid. Wherever there are Spy x Family fans, there is someone screaming for Loid and Yor to just kiss already. From the rumblings I’ve heard online, it hasn’t happened in the manga, so I’ll have to remain patient until it finally gets animated.
Yuri’s pressure not only had Yor and Loid questioning if they could prove their marriage but if they were safe together. They’ve been married for a short time and there are already marriage woes. Let’s get into Spy x Family 1×09 and see if Yor and Loid can learn to love each other.
WILL THEY OR WON’T THEY?
When we lasy saw the Forgers, Loid was about to kiss Yor in front of her brother, Yuri. Loid thinks nothing of the kiss. He is a spy who has kissed countless women on missions before. Only Yor isn’t ready for this and breaks her strict ‘no drinking’ rule. Now drunk, she thinks it’s best to get the kiss over with and goes in for it – until she’s stopped by Yuri. His sister complex is too strong, especially after Yor promised to marry Yuri years ago. How could she possibly betray him? Spoiler alert: Yor doesn’t have a brother complex, but still has an abundance of love for him.
It was nice to see Loid smile when he notices just how much Yor and Yuri care for each other. Seeing Yor and Yuir care for each other is really the first time Loid has really seen someone care for someone else. While he cares for Anya and Yor, it’s not the same. Yuri burst through their door making crazy commands and in return, he got smacked in the face by Yor. Yor will still care for Yuri regardless of his antics, proving that unconditional love is a thing. Loid doesn’t have unconditional love for anything but his work, so this mission showed him what unconditional love looks like. Will the Spy x Family anime ever stop being wholesome?
LISTENING IN ON YOR’S LIFE
Loid thinks that if Yuri is a part of the secret police, then Yor must know what job her brother holds. If she knows, then she may only have married Loid so she can get close to him and jeopardize Operation Strix. So he bugs her collar and listens in when she goes to work. Agent Twilight has become an expert in spying on the women in his life. As he listens in on Yor’s conversations with her coworkers, he finds that there is no intel.
I love how the Spy x Family anime takes things to the most absurd extreme for the drama. But, I’m still wondering where half of Loid’s brain cells went. First, he doesn’t question why Yor is an aggressive fighter when she is drunk at Anya’s party. Then, he doesn’t realize that even though he knew she had a little brother, Loid never looked into Yuri, He assumed the lack of family ties was going to be enough for the mission. What if Yor had a brother complex? Then it definitely would have been worth it to look into Yuri before marrying Yor.
Agent Twilight is the best spy the West has, and the man refuses to do his research well the first time. I love him, but putting a wiretap on his wife is not the way to build a relationship. Yor is already questioning her role as a wife because she realizes Loid is pulling away from her. Everything could have been solved if Loid did thorough research. Instead, he choose the hard way.
SECRET SPY OR POLICE INTERROGATION?
Yor’s boss tells her that he needs her to send a letter to the post office. On her way to deliver the letter, the secret police stop her. They tell her that the letter contains a cipher and might be a letter to the West. Even worse, it has her name on it. Yor won’t be arrested for espionage unless she has family in the State Security Service. Yuri is in the State Security Service, but like everyone else in Spy x Family, that is his secret to keep. Instead, Yor tells the officers that both her brother and husband are honorable people but if the police question that honor again, she will show them no mercy. When she says that, the police take another look at the letter and realize they read the wrong kind of cipher and let her go.
Loid doesn’t reveal that he and Franky were the secret police. This disguise gave him what he needed. Yor doesn’t know that Yuri is in the State Security Service. So, he walks her home, takes the bug off of her, and listens as she admits her insecurities to him. Loid understood that Yor was trying to be better for their pretend family – and took it the wrong way. He thought that maybe she was pretending to be the perfect wife just to manipulate him.
What I appreciate about this anime is that everyone has a secret identity, but it’s just like real life. There are so many people who are playing pretend just to appear perfect or fit into society. When Loid explains this to Yor, this became one of my favorite episodes. It’s not often I watch anime to connect to real life, but I appreciate the lesson in this one. There’s no need to pretend all the time.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
- It looks like Spy x Family is taking the miscommunication trope and spinning it for the sake of romance and espionage.
- Manga readers better not spoil the rest of the story for anime watchers from here on out. I’ve already seen too much.
- Is it bad that I liked that there was less Anya in this episode?
- Yuri needs to clean out his work locker. There are way too many pictures of Yor in there.
- Damian’s back next episode and I am genuinely concerned for Anya’s standing at Eden.
