What We Do in the Shadows 4×01 has returned WWDITS to our screens once again, giving us more of our favorite Staten Island vampires. Last we left them, these vamps were headed their separate ways. Nadja moved to London to be on the Supreme Vampiric Council. Nandor wanted to explore the world because he felt lonely. Laszlo felt obligated to watch over Colin after he is reborn, so Laszlo sent Guillermo to go with Nadja.
After a year, finally, the camera crew comes to check on these vampires, but the house is in disarray. There are raccoons everywhere, holes in the floor, and the basement is flooded with sewage for Colin to swim in. Looks like without help, Laszlo has let the house fall apart, proving that none of the vampires can survive without Guillermo. So what happens when the rest of the gang returns home?
LAZLO WATCHES OVER BABY COLIN

Last season, Laszlo was adamant about not going to London with Nadja. He swore that he was sick of the place and came up with every excuse not to go. Of course, Colin was the real reason he didn’t leave with Nadja. After shipping her off with a note, he went off to parent an energy vampire so he could make them anything but boring. He tried all sorts of psychological methods to make associations in Baby Colin’s brain so he won’t like boring things. Laszlo wants to change Colin so much that he won’t even call Colin by his name. He’s now just The Boy. As much as Laszlo tries, there are hints that Colin will never change, but that’s yet to become really obvious.
I enjoyed seeing Laszlo be like a father to Colin. In the last season of What We Do in the Shadows, Laszlo became a close friend to Colin so he wouldn’t feel lonely. Seeing him become a big softie for Colin has been the biggest development for him. When we first met Laszlo, he was only there to be a sex fiend and Nadja’s lover. Over time, the series has done all it can to make Laszlo a bit more complicated each season. This is fair considering his solo episode was Emmy-nominated. So, the writers are aware that Laszlo could be a bigger character. It will be exciting to see how Laszlo grows as Colin grows. Will he wish that he and Nadja had a child of their own?
NADJA AND NANDOR RETURN FROM ABROAD

Laszlo notices that there have been packages landing on his doorstep every day for the past two weeks. So, when the doorbell rings again, he swears it’s the gas company back to tell him there’s a leak. Despite the fact that there is a leak, he elects to ignore it and eats the maintenance man instead. However, he hears a very familiar voice and is greeted by his wife Nadja. She’s come back from London to tell him that she’s quit the Supreme Vampiric Council. The council continued to reject her ideas, so she came home to complete her goal: to open a vampire nightclub.
Nadja’s looks this season are killer. What I love is how they’ve made her look more regal and extravagant, given the fact that she has more power. Though her outfits have evolved, her personality hasn’t. Both Nadja and Nandor went away for some soul-searching and maturity, yet they still continue to be out of touch with the world. Nandor swears he’s going to travel the world and only travels across several states with a random family. The only thing that’s evolved is his decision-making. He’s now on the hunt for the love of his life, and he’ll do anything to get it.
The best part about this mockumentary is that yes, these vampires are out of touch with the world, but that doesn’t make them unrelatable. What We Do in the Shadows always asks, “how can we take a strange being like a vampire and make them a little more human than we think?” Then, they’ll come back and hit you with the humor. Trust me, I was cackling when I found out Nandor was involved in blocking the Suez Canal.
GUILLERMO’S TEMPORARY LONG-TERM STAY

When Laszlo isn’t busy eating the gas company employees in What We Do in the Shadows 4×01, he’s avoiding a knocking caused by the pipes. Only it isn’t the pipes, it’s Guillermo. He’s been stuck in one of the packages for the past two weeks. Once again, the vampires don’t understand that humans can’t just survive on Pedialyte. Guillermo was all set to travel the world with Nandor until Laszlo foiled his plans. So now, he’s putting himself first… after he takes care of the house, then after he takes care of Nandor, then after he becomes Nandor’s best man. He’s got his priorities in check, we think… Can Guillermo find his way back to a normal life?
Guillermo has by far always been my favorite character in What We Do in the Shadows. The fact that he continues to have a bigger spotlight each season and find his way to a form of autonomy is great. But, the funniest part about him is that he can’t give up taking care of his vampires.
I’m with the other fans of What We Do in the Shadows, though. There are so many hints of a romance brewing between Nandor and Guillermo, that it would be a miss if that relationship never blossomed that way. Nandor’s looking for the love of his life, and Guillermo’s never left his side. They’d make the perfect partners, no? Unless Guillermo stays human, then that might put a wrench in their love plans, but here’s to hoping.
OVERALL THOUGHTS ON What We Do in the Shadows 4X01
- I thought I would miss Colin Robinson, but I’m happy to have less of him this season.
- The Guide had a character poster, so I’m sure she’ll become a bigger presence.
- I need to know more about Guillermo’s secret English boyfriend. Go off, Guillermo! But also, if you dumped him for Nandor I wouldn’t be mad…
- I always worry that What We Do in the Shadows will lose its touch with each season, but that is never true. I can’t wait to see where this season takes us
- Bless FX for this double feature! More vampires = more serotonin.
