Fox Mulder was always an outsider. That was not just part of his charm, that was one of the things that made the show feel so distinctly sci-fi twenty something years ago, when our faith in the government and its institutions wasn’t as eroded as it is today.
But it just so happens that the world has changed. Fox Mulder hasn’t.
Or, as David Duchovny, who plays our favorite FBI agent/believer puts it: “the world has kind of caught up to Mulder’s conception of the world.”
If you’re a long-time fan like me, you recognize what a scary concept this is. If you’re a long time fan like me, you also understand this also threatens to change the whole fabric of the show. Because, part of the premise of The X-Files was always that Mulder was an underdog. But, is he one anymore?
Well, The X-Files returns for a 10-episode season 11 tonight that will hopefully answer that question – or, at the very least, will provide us with a new set of questions. And some Mulder/Scully. Yes. We’ve waited long enough for that. Forget platonic. We’re ready for some distinctly non-platonic action.
