The MTV Fandom Awards are back this year, just in time for San Diego Comic-Con, and with the categories already unveiled, we’re here to discuss who should win each category, who’s going to win, and more importantly, who shouldn’t win.
Today it’s time to tackle Best Revival Fandom of the Year, and what a doozy it was. So many old, beloved shows are coming back to our screens, or to our movie theaters, and taking up residence in our hearts. But some have made a bigger impact, returned in a much better way, or made us look back fondly on the good old days. And so we made the tough choices so you wouldn’t have to.
Or maybe, we did it so you’d have a better idea of how you should vote.
So, here are our picks for who should win, who will win and who definitively shouldn’t win Best Revival Fandom of The Year:
WHO SHOULD WIN
“The X-Files”: This fandom should have been dead – after all, the last episode aired in 2002 and the last movie in 2008. And yet they came out in record-breaking numbers to watch the six new episodes. In fact, they came out in such numbers that FOX is probably still regretting the fact that they only ordered six when they had all the pieces in play. The good news? This fandom is not dead – not all. They’ll keep showing up. They kept alive for years on fanfic and hope. Now it’s just up to FOX to deliver the episodes.
Or, to deliver the episodes and Mulder and Scully. This, after all, doesn’t work without Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny both. The revival has proven that. And, as long as those two can be convinced to come back, so will the fans.
WHO WILL WIN
Harry Potter / Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: It’s been five years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, five years without new canon. And yet the Harry Potter Fandom is just too big, with fans of the books and the movies coming together to just annihilate the competition. And they’ll be paying attention for sure – after all, they’re waiting for the Harry Potter Play to be released in book form on July 31st.
These are, after all, the same people who lined up at midnight for books five, six and seven, breaking records with each consecutive book. If you add that up to the people who lined up for the movies, and the new generation eager to find their own Harry Potter story to latch onto, there’s just no way to beat them. Or at least, there shouldn’t be.
WHO WON’T WIN
Why it Won’t Win: “Baywatch” (Series) / Baywatch (Film): Zac Efron IS hot, but that’s not enough to catapult a show that most people have already forgotten about into a Fandom Awards win. Especially when Baywatch, for all that we all watched it, has become more a pop culture phenomenon than a show we re-watch. If we were voting only on Efron, though, that might be a different story.
Why it Won’t Win: “Gilmore Girls” / “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life”: There’s anticipation, yes, but no one has even seen one episode of the revival. What if it sucks? What if Lorelai and Luke don’t end up together? What if Rory and Dean do? No, there’s just too much uncertainty for this to win. I do anticipate it’ll do better than the other four in the Who Won’t Win category. Gilmore Girls is, after all, a beloved show and people have been asking for more episodes for a long, long time.
Why it Won’t Win: “High School Musical” / “High School Musical 4: Wild and Knights”: The movie hasn’t even been released yet, and though we have some idea of what it’ll be about, there’s no song stuck in our head, no OTP to swoon over, not yet. Plus, the original stars won’t be back for this one, so even if there is excitement, it won’t come even close to the big boys.
Why it Won’t Win: “Full House” / “Fuller House”: No. Just no. In no universe does this beat out even Baywatch. As excited as we were to see the revival, there are just other things we’re more excited about. Plenty of other things.
