After weeks of contemplation, Netflix has decided to cancel One Day at a Time. And we’re furious. Correction, we’re livid!
One Day a Time told the story of a Cuban single mom living with her two kids, mother, and a nosey neighbor that slowly but surely became family. We laughed, cried, and felt our hearts grow sizes across 3 amazing seasons. And the fact that Netflix has cancelled it, after spending MILLIONS to get back Friends and on original programming, feels like a slap in the face.
In a series of tweets explaining why One Day at a Time was cancelled, they said:
And to anyone who felt seen or represented — possibly for the first time — by ODAAT, please don’t take this as an indication your story is not important. The outpouring of love for this show is a firm reminder to us that we must continue finding ways to tell these stories.

So, you’re glad that queer women, Latinas, and young men felt seen and represented on One Day at a Time. But you don’t care enough about us feeling seen and represented to give us another season or a series finale to wrap things up? I call BULLSHIRT on all of this!
Television show networks and streaming services have been talking big and not delivering when it comes to quality content that feels like and is great representation. Instead they’ve been cancelling shows like Sweet/Vicious, Pitch, and now One Day at a Time because “simply not enough people watched to justify another season.”
THERE ARE PEOPLE WATCHING. WE’RE WATCHING!
Also, is Netflix telling us that Ashton Kutcher show called The Ranch has been getting more views? More positive praise? More people talking about it than One Day at a Time? Once again, I call BULLSHIRT!
One Day at a Time felt like home to many of us. And we will take this pain, remember how it was caused, and continue creating great content that makes us feel seen. So, go ahead Netflix. Cancel one of the best shows on your entire roster. Gloria Calderon Kellett and everyone on One Day at a Time WILL SURVIVE THIS!
That’s what we Latinos are good at.
